Kite Runner Setting

The Kite Runner is divided into three sections. The first section Amir and Hassan are

children in Kabul. The second section covers the years after Amir went to Fremont California

because Afghanistan was being raided by the Russians. Then the last section Amir went back to

Kabul for redemption from past guilt of not taking actions. There is a book and a movie of the

Kite Runner. The characters, plot, and setting are pretty much the same in both but there are

some differences that I will talk about.

The main characters in the first section, are Amir and Hassan. They are children and

Hassan is Amir’s servant. Amir is from the tribe of Pashtum Shunni and Hassan is from the tribe

haraza shia. Baba was Amir’s father, but favored Hassan, and it is later

In the final section Sorahab, Hassan’s son was a main

character. The setting is mainly in Kabul Afghanistan except when Amir and Baba go to

America. The story begins in 1975 and continues to 2001.

The book and the movie have some difference that I’m going to speak about. The plot

covers multiple betrayals and offers the possibility of redemption for Amir. In the first section,

there's some tension in the household. Ali and Hassan are Hazara they don't have the same status

as Amir and Baba. Ali is abused by the neighborhood boys. To make things a bit more

uncomfortable, Amir doesn't get nearly enough attention from his father. He is resentful about it.

When Hassan was raped by Assef, and Amir does not stop it, he feels guilty. The rape is not in

the movie. Despite all of the conflict, Amir discovers later that he really cared about Hassan and

then that he was actually his half-brother. Amir betrays Hassan and as a result is sent to America

with his father Baba.

During the second section, of the book, Amir graduated high school and collage while

helping his father. The third and final part of the book, Amir goes back to Kabul to find

The history of Afghanistan influences Amir’s life by the way the Afghan people treat Hazaras. Amir has been brought up to treat Hazaras with less respect than other people. This means that Amir might never see Hassan the same way because of how the Pashtuns see Hazaras. The Pashtun people see themselves as “true” Afghanistan people, but because the Hazaras are descendants of a Pashtun conqueror they are seen as evil. This greatly affects Amir’s relationship with Hassan.…
