Kite Runner Father Son Relationship

“Time shall unfold what plighted cunning hides: Who cover faults, at last shame them derides“ (William Shakespeare, King Lear). In The Kite Runner by Khaled Hosseini, the relationship between a father and two sons is put into place. When speaking with Rahim Khan, Amir is told a large secret late within his life which changes his perspective on the past, the people he spent time with, in addition to how he reacted negatively during many events. Time has unfolded the true nature of Amir 's life, and the fault that Baba covered since both Amir and Hassan are his sons. When individuals in a relationship choose to maintain secrets of a sensitive nature, this will lead to tension between the two parties and likely foster mistrust and disillusionment when the secrets are finally revealed. On Hassan’s Birthday, Baba summoned Dr. Kumar to fix Hassan’s cleft lip, located left of the midline. Baba would “never [miss] Hassan’s birthday”, constantly gifting things even when Hassan was “too modest to actually suggest a present” (Hosseini 44). This irritates Amir because “Hassan hadn’t done anything to earn Baba’s affections” (Hosseini 46). It is unfair to Amir that Baba doesn’t include both him and Hassan in the gift. Baba also showed more love to Hassan when “he patted Hassan on the back”, and even when Baba “put his arm around his shoulder” (Hosseini 14). Amir did not have an arm around his shoulder, not gaining any recognition from Baba, which leaves him feeling left out and in desire of his affection. From the large secret held from Amir, there is copious amounts of tension between him and Baba, especially since Baba avoids showing affection towards him. Giving more attention to Hassan makes it appear as if he is more important than Amir, and Baba’s constant rejection of Amir aids in the feeling of him not being good
