Courage is not the absence of fear. It is fighting one’s way through even though they are afraid. Khaled Hosseini’s The Kite Runner, features various character’s utilizing their courage to overcome the adversity waiting for them both in America and Afghanistan. Amir, the protagonist who is coward at first, faced a lot of situations requiring audacity which eventually changed him to a person who can stand up to his ideals. Hassan who is a great example of a courageous person faced challenging situations where he utilized his courage and proved his loyalty to Amir. Baba whose ideals constantly gets challenged throughout the novel, uses courage to be true to himself. When an individual commits an act of courage, then they will further nurture their personal integrity, because they managed to overcome their fears and express their feelings.

One of Baba’s astounding feats is him defending a woman from a Russian soldier which risks his life in the process. Baba is a man that expresses his opinions proudly and openly. This heroic act further improves his upstanding moral integrity. When Baba migrated to America he committed a number of courageous acts one of which is refusing food stamps offered to him. Baba’s aware of the adversity he will have to face once he refused the offer. Baba’s boldness to refuse the food stamps and face the hardship waiting for him came from him desiring to be true to his ideals. Aside from poverty, one of the greatest challenges Baba has to face in America is cancer. When Baba learned that he has cancer he refused to undergo chemotherapy since it won’t cure him, but only prolong his life. Baba’s boldness to face cancer head on came from his recklessness and straight ideals. All of Baba’s courageous acts resulted in him honestly following his ideal and
