Our lives, actions, emotions and expressions can all be attributed to to one component in everyone’s lives; their experiences. Past experiences have the ability to shape an individual's behaviour and thus the life choices that they choose to make. The novel The Kite Runner, by Khaled Hosseini, follows the life of Amir, a young boy living in Afghanistan with his father, Baba, and his servent, Hassan. After witnessing Hassan’s rape, Amir lives his life with this weight on his shoulders, ultimately leading to a change in his character. While discussing Amir’s behavior with Rahim Khan, Baba states that “A boy who won’t stand up for himself becomes a man who can’t stand up to anything” (Hosseini, 24). Baba reveals Amir’s cowardice. Amir was unable to defend himself from bullies, like Assef, which shows his lack of bravery. In the alleyway Amir thinks, “I had one last chance to make a decision.... In the end, I ran” (82). His decision to stand by and watch Assef rape Hassan showed both his immaturity and selfishness. Amir only considered his own safety in the ally in order to flee the possible punishments from Assef. When Amir is 12, even though he runs from Hassan while he is being raped and does not help him, he still watches the horrific event. Amir watches arguably his best friend being harassed and raped to the point where it traumatizes Amir enough that he is “[...] biting down on [his] fist, hard enough to draw blood [...]” and “[...] weeping [...]” (Hosseini 77). Although Amir does run away from Hassan, it takes a great deal of strength to watch his best friend get hurt, and the fact that he is biting himself and crying reveal how hard it is for him to stand and watch the event. This strength that Amir possesses also stays with him into and throughout adulthood. Once Amir returns to Afghanistan, he meets Assef again, and he decides to fight him to save Sohrab.…

The common consensus is if a book is converted into a movie, then the movie will be essentially a disappointment. In The Kite Runner, director Marc Forster’s version falls just short of the original novel by Khaled Hosseini. With removed scenes, themes and emotional ties to characters, the differences between the book and the movie are too great to claim Forster a succes. In the movie, The Kite Runner, significant scenes such as Sohrab’s suicide attempt, Amir’s relationship with Soraya and the bagger in Kabul are change or deleted, affecting the reader 's view, understanding and feeling towards the original rendition of the novel.…

The Kite Runner by Khaled Hosseini follows the privileged life of a Pashtun, or Sunni Muslim, Amir, clashing with the dissimilar lifestyle of his half-brother and best friend by the name of Hassan, his lowly servant. The novel explicitly depicts the prejudice against Hazaras, also known as the Shia Muslims, in Afghanistan, when Hassan, who is part of the inferior race, is raped because of his religious beliefs. Choosing cowardice over courage, Amir sees the crime being committed against his best friend, but does not try to stop it, and has to live with the guilt for the rest of his life. An internally afflicted man, Amir seeks to redeem himself and reach atonement for his past sins. Amir progresses from an adolescent, who is a coward, into…

Between rape, murder, the Taliban, and a strained father-son relationship, The Kite Runner by Khaled Hosseini is an emotional rollercoaster with many lessons to discover. The lessons I have gained from this novel is that politics and society should not affect our relationships, rape needs to be more of an open topic, and there is always redemption for those who search for it. Politics and society can affect how we interact with each other. In Afghanistan there are two major ethnic groups: the Pashtun and the Hazara. Both groups stem from different forms of Islam, which then causes both groups not to get along.…
