Kite Flying

I had chosen the book Kite Flying by author and illustrator Grace Linn with some help from my librarian. A young Chinese girl notices how windy it is outside and thinks that it is a perfect day to fly a kite. With her mother, father and sister, the young girl and her family each contribute putting together a different part of their dragon kite. Finally, after the dragon kite is all put together, the family takes the kite outside and begins to watch it fly. The young girl says "Look up! Our dragon is talking to the wind!" I think that that the little girl enjoys the kite her family and she had made because of how enthusiastic she is about being able to fly the kite and how high it goes. I chose this specific book because I feel that it teaches

The Kite Runner, by Khaled Hosseini, is a story about two boys who grow up together and the life-altering challenges they face. While many believe this is a heartbreaking story about facing adversity, there are underlying parallels betwixt characters and scenes displayed in the novel and current events happening in Afghanistan. The scene in chapter 16 when Sanabaur comes back to Hassan, beaten and scarred deliniates what the Taliban took away from the women of Afghanistan during that time period. Because Sanabaur came back to Hassan with scars and cuts littering her face, it takes away all of the power she previously had.…

Molly Bang Paper When thinking of this assignment, I immediately knew which book I was going to choose. I felt that choosing a favorite book from my childhood could be a fun way to see the differences in how I viewed it then, and how I might view it today. As a child, I was in love with Mercer Mayer’s “Little Critter” books (and still am today). I decided not to go searching for an easy or popular book, rather I wanted to take one I know and love and see if/how Molly Bang’s principles were applied.…

The excitement of an impending marriage -- a young couple surrounded by relatives and friends coming together to welcome them to their new home and celebrate the union. This opening scene, earnest in its wholesomeness, belies the tumult of the backdrop -- Communist China during the 1950s and 1960s -- some of the most unsettled years in the country's long history.…

    Kites By Raymond Souster

In the poem “Kites,” by Raymond Souster, the portrayal of the kite has a simplistic meaning, but when examined closer, it can be found to relate to the charitable moments of life and the hardships the future holds. This underlying theme has a personal connection in my life because the author demonstrates the importance of creating a positive outlook and not dwelling on the possibility of negativities that could occur. Within the poem, different ideas are present, such as the comparison of the kite to life, how to deal with hard scenarios with grace and not dwelling on the negatives, and finally through his detailed imagery the idea of maintaining positivity no matter the situation. Through symbolism, Souster demonstrates the connection of life and the kite by representing it as a beacon of freedom, but also the complications that present themselves.…

There are many books that have been banned in schools all across America, there is one though that I believe should not be banned. This book is “The Kite Runner” by Khaled Hosseini. The book is narrated by the protagonist and it details his life up until the day he finishes writing his memories. The beginning details his childhood in Afghanistan with his best friend, and servant, up until his twelfth summer, the summer of 1975, for which he never truly forgave himself for. He then recounts what happened to his life during the Russian occupation of Afghanistan and the challenges his father had in bringing him to America.…

Establishing an Authentic Aboriginal Voice in Picture books If a strong literature based on Aboriginal forms is to develop, the place for this development is among people least affected by assimilation, and once an upsurge of literature begins it is only a matter of conjecture where it may lead. In fact, future Aborigines may look back on this present settlement literature as having lost simplicity, or a complexity only brought out through a deep reading of the text (Mudrooroo 315). Developing an authentic and complex Aboriginal voice, separate from the ideals of the colony, may be an ongoing process for adult literature. However, the same struggle is less methodical for children 's picture books as Fanon 's three phases of establishing…

Many people have something sentimental to them that acts more than just an object because it develops a meaning in their lives. These objects can be described as symbols. A symbol is a thing that represents or stands for something else, especially a material object representing something abstract. Often writers use a technique called symbolism which is the use of symbols in literature that gives a deeper meaning in context to an object, person, situation, or event. Symbols can be used as a strong tool to help drive a plot in a novel.…

Over the years, children’s literature has established itself as a vital tool for the exploration, feeling and creativity ideals that both children and young adults depend upon. Children’s literature is a necessity to facilitate learning, assist in shaping reader’s minds, to stimulate their thought processes and is a reflection of social change. Historically, Australian picturebooks were not a readily available or utilised resource. Australian colonial children were also only exposed to British children’s books, which sheltered them from experiencing literature about their own history, nature and landscape.…
