The Kit Kat Club Play Analysis

The year is 1931, the place, Berlin, and here we see the entrance of a young American writer, Clifford Bradshaw. Later we see the entrance of his love interest, and main attraction of the Kit Kat Club, Sally Bowles. Throughout the play we follow the romance between the two as it grows and develops, and finally fails. We also follow the tragically doomed romance of German Boarding House owner, Fraulein Schneider, and her Jewish suitor Herr Schultz. At intervals every so often we see the Emcee give information on what seems to be going on in the political world of Berlin at that time. Through the entire play, “politics” is mentioned often and the out only source of information on these “politics” in the play are these intermittent asides by the Emcee. Through the obvious talent in singing, being able to effectively express emotion through song as well as voice, helped to convey to the audience the depth of what was occurring, how blissfully ignorant the average person was, and how truly despicable the Nazi party was. That as well as the talent behind the costume design, especially the costumes worn by Emcee were spectacular in their ability to render emphasis to political events. Emcee’s money costume and his Nazi dress as well as the Jewish jail outfit, all of them drew attention to what was occurring, and how blissful the average person was, because they didn’t care. And then, the musical artist, what talent! To be able to evoke such emotion from the audience, during several songs the tension felt by the audience was palpable, so much so that you could cut it with a knife, especially the song directly following the engagement party. In all, the production was extremely effective, it kept the mood in the audience relatively light-hearted whilst addressing a very distressing
