Social justice, human rights, community development and social development are both national and global issues that social workers must understand in order to practice effectively. The National Association of Social Workers (NASW) (2008) code of ethics states that, “A social workers mission “is to enhance human well-being and meet the needs and empowerment of people who are vulnerable, oppressed, and living in poverty” (Kirst-Ashman, 2011, pp.428). Thus, when it comes to issues of social justice and human rights, it is a social worker’s responsibility to attend to and advocate on a global basis.
