Nappy hair cannot be combed, washed, or styled like straight hair. It isn’t shiny when light hits it, it’s more of a sheen and it grows upward, away from the scalp instead of downward like looser textures. Because the curls and coils are so tight, kinky hair experiences more breakage than straight hair, especially when it is trying to be detangled. Because of it coils, kinky hair is more susceptible to breakage. Kinky hair also make styles such as braids and dreadlocks easier to wear because the curl pattern is easy to hold the style. The drastically different grooming required for kinky hair, combined with its foreignness to many African American women, have made the perfect recipe for ignorance and disdain.
