Throughout the study of my personal family, I aquired a great amount of knowledge on kinship and descent of my family. I was able to construct a well detailed diagram starting with my grandparents creating a learning path towards the understanding of kinship. I observed my kinship system by learning the descent, the terminologies, the differences in the kinship chart through my fathers and mothers lineage, the parallellism of my kinship diagram if my kinship system and terminologies were that of the Iroquois, the traditional residence of my kin and I, where I would reside if my family practiced patrilocal or matrilocal residence and most of all I learned a crucial amount of information regarding kinship, kinship …show more content…
My kinship system represents a bilateral descent. How did I observe this? All of my family members from my mother’s and father’s side are all equal in importance. There are no family members who are more important than the other. This meaning that my grandparents, uncles, aunts and cousin are equally important no matter they are patrilineal or matrilineal. Although I interact with my mother’s side of the family more than my father’s side because they live near me and my father’s family doesn’t, both sides of my kinship system are equally important. My kinship also represented Eskimo kinship terminology. In my kinship system, my biological mother is called mother and my biological father is called father. In addition, the term aunt refers to my father’s sisters anduncle refers to my father’s brothers and mother’s brother. My siblings are classified as my sisters since they are the children of my mother and father and all of the children of my aunts and uncles are represented as my …show more content…
My father and mother helped me gather information about my family. My mother gathered information from her family while my father gathered information from his side of the family so I could construct the kinship chart and kinship report. There is so much I learned from this exercise. I learned about my traditional residence, i learned my kinship sytem and terminology, my descent and the important family members through my father’s lineage and mother’s lineage. I learned that kinship is the blood relationshp between people or even the shring of characeristics of people. i also learned that kinship systems can have a variety of presentations and differences because kinship systems consist of descents and terminologies. Most importantly, I learned how the role of cultural anthropologists is so important with the techniques of interviewing and developing kinship diagrams. The role of cultural anthropologists to determine and research kinships systems depends heavily on the studying of the descent and terminologies with the understanding of culture. The techniques of interviewing and developing kinship diagrams couldn’t be done without the knowledge of the different aspects to constructing the research and diagrams of
