The power of the pearl is following along because Kino has to bring the pearl everywhere. This is an example of the transformation because Kino thinks he can't live or function well without the inquitous pearl. Inevitably, another attack occurred. ""Trackers," he said, "Come!"" (75) Without delay, Kino sends Juana and his son to a cave while he stays to fight. "If the trackers found the swept place, he must leap for the horseman, kill him quickly and take the rifle. That was his only chance in the world." (73) Was killing the tracker really his only chance? The jewel persuades Kino to become a criminal and an assassin. As a result, the bullet flies unknowingly and hits Coyotito, Kino's only son. "And in the surface of the pearl he saw Coyotito lying in the little cave with the top of his head shot away." He refuses to listen to her so, she goes behind his back and dig up the pearl early in the morning. He wakes up, follows her, grabs the pearl, and: “... struck her in the face with his clenched fist...and he kicked her in the side”(Steinbeck 59). If he ever had conflict with Juana before the pearl, he would have been patient and tried to talk it out with her. He isdesperate for the pearl that he becomes oblivious. He will hurt anyone who came in his way. He stopped thinking about what is the best for his family because he was brainwashed with all the good thing the pearl will bring him. It would have brought him wealth, higher status, married license, a gun, and an education for Coyotito. In addition, after he took the pearl from Juana and abused her, he just left her there. He left her there and walked away. He never looked back once to see if she was okay. Then, a tracker followed him so: “... got his knife out and lunged at one dark figure and felt his knife go home…”(59). Before the pearl, he would have never been associated with violence. He would never ever lay a finger on anyone. He would have gave them what they wanted and walked away. Kino was never associated with violence or weapons. He and Juana are oblivious to the evil that is stirring up in the town because of his pearl and think “that everyone share[s] their joy” (23). They are trapped inside their own bubble and because of it are unaware of the oncoming darkness that is lurking within their village. The only thing that Kino can see in his pearl are his dreams for the future and his own wants and needs, which renders him “blind” and untouched by the darkness because of his naive belief that everyone has his happiness. Because of this, Kino begins to believe that his legendary pearl is the best and that he will get a high price for it. However, he “[is] helpless to protect himself” from the reality that befalls him when the pearl dealers cheat him out of his pearl (51). He doesn’t realize that the pearl dealers are only trying to get it so they can sell it for more money to their customers, and is fooled into believing that his pearl would bring him lots of money and great fortune. He struck her in the face with his clenched fist and she fell among the boulders, and he kicked her in the side” (Steinbeck,p.59). This shows that, Kino is attached to the pearl and he didn't want Juana to get rid of it. This also shows that, Kino didn't care that she was his wife and he would do anything to keep that pearl. Kino has let this pearl control his life because he wants his family to be happy and have all they need but what he didn't realize was that it was tearing his family apart. At the end of the story he finally realizes that the pearl was no good for the family. For example, “And Kino drew back his arm and flung the pearl with all his might” (Steinbeck,p.90). This shows that he is realizing that the pearl was no good and he needed to get rid of it. This also shows that he didn't want the pearl anymore because all it was doing was tearing him away from his family. From the beginning of the book to the end there was a change in Kinos values. Kino has a wonderful family and he let this pearl control his life and by the end of the book his values changed and he realized that family was more important than a…
