Kinkakuji Research Paper

Kinkakuji is a Zen temple located in northern Kyoto. It was built at the end of the 14th century by Ashikaga Yoshimitsu, the 3rd shogun of the Ashikaga shogunate during the Muromachi period. It is a three-story square building, with top two floors covered in gold leaf. Each level of the building was built in a different historical architecture: The first floor was built in Shinden style, a manner of Heian period’s palatial architecture, with wood pillars and white plaster walls contrasting the golden upper stories of the pavillion; the second floor was built in Bukke style as a samurai’s residence; the third floor was built as a Chinese Zen hall. At the top of the temple stands a golden phoenix ornament.

I found this Yakudoshi party fun and very informative celebration (not to mention the great meal my wife and I had). I had an idea of the different types or the variety of food the Japanese culture has to offer, however, I think the most valuable lessons here were learning about the culture. I was fortunate enough to hear how the older generation and the younger generation view the practice of Yakudoshi, compare their views on food, hear and learn about some Japanese etiquettes (especially in the use of chopsticks as I described it in the discussion experience below), and hear their views on interracial marriage. Although the young Japanese couple had a hard time convincing their children to consume some of their meal, watching the young…
