“Welcome to the Kingston Ranch.” Emily said as we started down a dirt road covered by a canopy of trees. At the end of the long road a large white ranch house appeared into view. “Holy cow.” I muttered causing Emily to laugh. “Oh this’ll be great. I shrieked before frantically opening the door causing all twelve sets of eyes to land on me. Sheepishly I stood behind

As teenagers growing up in Powder Springs, Georgia during the 1980’s, it was somewhat challenging at times to find safe and entertaining ways to occupy our time. Even though we did not have free reign to do as we chose, I would not categorize my parents as extremely strict. Relying on our parents, as if they were our personal taxi service, my sister and I struggled to find activities relatively close to home. After discovering we really enjoyed skating, we spent countless Friday and Saturday nights at the Sparkles Skating Rink in Paulding County. The indoor facility was a safe environment for teenagers, which provided my parents with a certain level of comfort to allow us to gather with friends.…

Most teenagers would probably tell you that the beginning of their adulthood was marked by having to do laundry for the first time, or being able to drive alone, or perhaps no longer sitting at the children's table at family events. To those who were not fortunate enough to have grown up at summer camp, this might not seem like such a big decision to make. But Coleman was my outlet, my second home for ten consecutive summers and spending those two months anywhere else seemed inconceivable to me.…

Ordinarily, the forest would naturally be quiet; but there wasn’t a sound to be heard (Excluding the group themselves), the morning sun just beginning to peak over the mountain’s edge and the moist air thick and cold against their lungs. Wendy had layered on a leather coat over a thick flannel jacket, paired with black jeans and black boots that laced up to her shin’s; she walked with a certain air to her, that seemed like she could (And would,) kick you through a tree with no effort. Dipper had changed into a blue button up covered by a black jacket and the same jeans he had arrived to gravity falls with; his hat was pulled onto his head and the cap tilted down to hide his eyes as they scanned the large map he and his friends had been creating…

The family was already stressed enough, what with the previous day’s 1⁄2 cm of rain draining the hills and streaming across the floor, its volume increased by the early spring melt. The poorly constructed shack had no floors but dirt that had now become mud, veined with rivulets. With no insulation and chinks in the walls, keeping a near term mother warm and dry was a full time task. The available help was a 14 year old girl and a boy just turned 11. Then there was the earthquake.…
