Kingsford officially became recognised as a suburb on 25 June 1936. Prior to becoming its own suburb, it was mostly undeveloped land and was known as South Kensington. The suburb is mainly residential with a population of 14,100. It has a large commercial area where the markets, restaurants, hotels, and bars are found. Kingsford is surrounded by other eastern suburbs, making it close to Sydney, beaches, and other recreational areas.
