“...And in the wake of recent events, we must now consider potential candidates for king--” “‘Recent events’? No need to sugarcoat it, Hubert, surely we are all tough enough to handle the news of King Mildred’s death…” An outspoken noble called out. “‘Potential candidates’? Surely, there is no other option except for Prince Bartholomew Theodore Bertram Kronin IV--” a greater baron pointed out. “Well… everyone knows about the rumours,” a lesser noble interrupted, only to be immediately shushed by his peers. Though these rumours he spoke of had been circulating the castle for 17 years, it was frowned upon to bring it up in public, especially in front of individuals well associated with the ruling royal family. …show more content…
Intrigued, Agnes looked closer. It seemed to be moving. “Is that... A snake?” The kingdom’s coat of arms flashed in Agnes’ mind. A serpent coiled around a crown. “Yes, why?” “Wait,” Agnes’ eyes opened wide, “Your parents died in the Great Battle 17 years ago. You have a pet snake. And your name is Hugh-- which could be short for Humphrey Ulfrid Garfield Hillingham!” she bounced up and down excitedly, energized for the first time in hours. “Humphrey Ulfrid Garfield Hillingham?” Hugh repeated reproachfully. “Well, Humphrey Ulfrid Garfield Hillingham the first, to be exact,” Agnes rolled her eyes. “And don’t sound so disgusted. The name you’re going by is Hugh.” About a week later, Agnes and Hugh had all but confirmed that Hugh was the true crown prince of Hillingham and compared Hugh’s face to a painted portrait of some of the Hillingham ancestors. Now, all they needed to do was to prove it to the kingdom to prevent Bartholomew from taking the throne. So they gathered their facts, planned their big speech, and tried to avoid suspicion. Unfortunately, Agnes’ father, the king’s head advisor, did not approve of Agnes associating herself with a peasant …show more content…
“The betrothal is a done deal, Agnes. And it will be final… the day after the coronation. Do this for your family.” And on that note, Agnes’ father swept out of the room with a harsh glance at Hugh, who was seated in the corner with his snake in the pocket of his peasant clothes watching

History is ripe with tales of traitors and treason, especially when one group is unhappy with another. Take, for example, John Brown’s three day raid on Harper’s Ferry in Virginia. Angry with the lack of progress in the abolition movement, Brown planned to take the military’s stockpiled arsenal at Harper’s Ferry, Virginia and use it to free slaves across the south (“John Brown’s”). Or maybe think about the more realistic 20 July Plot during World War II. Colonel Claus von Stauffenberg and some cohorts, believing that what Hitler and his Nazi regime was doing was immoral and unethical, blew up Hitler’s primary meeting house, The Wolf’s Lair (“July Plot”).…

Appearance v. Reality The two documents, The Declaration of Independence and “Identity” by Julio Noboa Polanco, highlight the theme of appearance versus reality to reveal the idea that being free is more important than conforming. Both texts complement each other in their central ideas, the central idea of the declaration being an obvious one: the framers wanted to cut ties with Britain and become their own nation. There were multiple central ideas in “Identity”, each one being able to support the overlying theme and connect to an idea from the Declaration. One central idea found in Identity was that of freedom of expression and the need to be free from corruption.…

I took the watch, and Jim he laid down and snored away; and by and by the storm let up for good and all; and the first cabin-light that showed I rousted him out, and we slid the raft into hiding quarters for the day. The king got out an old ratty deck of cards after breakfast, and him and the duke played seven-up a while, five cents a game. Then they got tired of it, and allowed they would "lay out a campaign," as they called it.…

Daniel McAvoy PSC 101 04/17/2016 Paper 2 Locke and Mill: Marxlandia or Mussolini Island? In the case that English, liberal philosophers John Locke and John Stuart Mill are stranded between two islands, one socialist island and another fascist island, and forced to flee to one, either option would pose its own distinct benefits and obstacles. Ultimately, though, Marxlandia would be a better, more fruitful choice for the philosophers to make than Mussolini Island. Locke, a 17th century, English philosopher, maintained that without consent, no authority could be had over the individual.…

On maps, some maps anyway, there is a spot where mapmakers usually write the label Pitgorm. A tavern and trading post stands there under the “g”—in the south of the dale halfway between the Forbidden and Gaulaghast mountains. They’re one building, a large building as these things go in the region, with no name or sign. It doesn’t need one; after all, not much is there. When outsiders say they are going to Pitgorm, that is where they go.…

The passage’s central argument is that the end justifies the means. More specifically, if a prince achieves a good end, he will be respected, regardless of the methods he employed to get there. A prince should act virtuously when he is able to, yet there are times in which he has no other choice than to act cruelly. In addition, a reputation of generosity requires a lot of money; expensive and ostentatious demonstrations of giving take away from the budget for protection and projects that benefit the community. Therefore, a prudent prince should not mind being called a miser if he is able to retain these funds.…

The Tudor Dynasty reigned over England after the War of the Roses, a bloody succession crisis ending with Henry VII, the first Tudor, becoming King of England. The Tudors reigned from 1485 to 1603, and despite their long reign the time in English History was rife with dramatic change and disorder that shaped the British Isles for centuries to come, with no small part owed to the Tudors. However, the Tudors reign or socio-economic causes for change and subsequent disorder must be evaluated. For example, one of the first rebellions experienced by the Tudors. Henry VII, the first Tudor, underwent an almost immediate challenge to his crown through the ‘Lambert Simnel’ rebellion (1487).…
