The narrator grew up on a plantation where there was no guarantee his family was still going to be there when he returned. This reality causes him to appreciate Laura even more. He has someone that no one can take away from him so he will do anything in his power to save her from her sickness. As a result of his loyalty, he has a strong desire to provide the money necessary to take her to a doctor. He feels like everything he does directly affects Laura. When the narrator discovers a way to make money he jumps on the opportunity, because any money gives him confidence of a brighter future. Winning the bingo jackpot means so much to him, and he will do anything to get this money. The jackpot in the bingo game was just $36.90, but it gives him a sense of hope. Although the people around him are yelling at him and insulting him, he does not give up. He is so confident that he can win the prize, he is suddenly lost in a trance.
