He believed he was born into divine right to apply absolute power of the monarchy. Louis viewed himself as the center of the universe, leading to his name the Sun King. The sun was his emblem to illustrate his status; he believed he was the source of light for all of his people.
Louis XIV worked restlessly to centralize and tighten the control of France. Starting with finances, Louis appointed Jean Baptise Colbert as his minister of finance. As the financial minister, Colbert helped decrease the deficit and produced growth within the industry. Colbert’s goal was to make France economically self-sufficient. Louis built on his father’s polices. Louis wanted an absolute royal rule to all parts if the land. With his handpicked ministers, Louis dominated the central government of France. The army stood at 350,000 and was completely controlled by the state. Rebellions were well controlled and suitably dealt with. The economy prospered in the beginning of Louis’ reign. France did well with overseas trade, there was more tax revenue being raised. The tax policy changed, causing the wealthy to pay less and the poor to pay more causing a rush in poverty. This was an issue that was concealed, leaving it to be the next ruler’s problem.
Religion was not an important discussion during the rule of Louis XIV. Louis has simple views relating to religion—the king controlled the Catholic Church and the church should do his as he commands. Louis’ beliefs created issues with popes but they had no choice but to follow his rule. Louis wanted religious uniformity enforced. In religious matters, in his dealing with nobility and Parliament, Louis revealed a desire to exercise powers that might suggest a modern dictator rather than a 17th century
