King Knights Research Paper

According to the urban dictionary a knight is “a man who served his sovereign or lord as a mounted soldier in armor”. In other words a professional killer. Even tough we view Knights as professional warriors, we failed to see that they were much more than a warrior. Knights were not merely professional warriors: knighthood includes guidelines that one must follow: the notion of social status, political power, legal classification, and cutural expressions of knightly identity-- bravery, honor, loyalty,and service to a woman. “Knights are the emblematic warriors of the European Middle Ages.” (Knights: In History and Legend, pg. 15) Knights first surfaced between the years of 1000-1350 after the fall of the Roman Empire. After the fall of the Roman Empire also known as The Medieval Period, Europe was dominated by a feudal system, which consisted of God being the supreme ruler, then a King being the appointed ruler of God here on Earth, followed by vassals and lords, knights and serfs. Various forms of combat were practiced at the tournaments including jousting, archery, and hand to hand combat using swords and other weapons. Many of these tournaments took place in castle grounds. “Medieval tournaments were major spectator sport --much like large sporting events today.” (Knights: In History and Legend, pg. 102) During those tournaments they had a variation of competitions but the two most popular ones were a melee, a free-for-all ‘battle’ and the joust, two knights riding a horse had to knock his opponent of his horse.
