He then was hired by the Dutch East India Company to again try and find a northeastern route. Hudson did not want to sail this way, but his instructions forbid him from sailing in a different direction. The ship that Hudson sailed on was called the Half Moon. He left Amsterdam on March 25, 1609. As he sailed he found it impossible to sail through the frozen waters and fog. Hudson knew he could not continue on this passage, so he made the decision to try and find a western passage to Asia. On July 3rd, Hudson and his men arrived at the banks of Newfoundland. As Hudson crew made their way onto the island, they were greeted with friendly Native Americans. Hudson traded with them in return for trinkets. The Native Americans told them stories about silver and copper mine in the country. Hudson crew suddenly became suspicious of the Native Americans and made them flee their homes. As they continued to sail, the came across many places, like Martha’s Vineyard, Cape Cod, and Chesapeake Bay. Henry and his crew continued to sail west until they came across the Jersey coast. They turned their ship north and began heading towards the coast. Hudson and his crew then discovered a river. Even though he was not the first to discover the river, he was the first to sail any distance on it. Because of this, the river was then named the Hudson River.
