Was Hammurabi’s Code Just?
If a surgeon cannot save an injured or sick patient could it be deemed just for his hands to be cut off gruesomely? Of course not, but yet this is a punishment included within Hammurabi's Code, the oldest surviving collection of laws in history. Hammurabi's code was written by King Hammurabi 4000 years ago in his thirty eighth year of ruling out of forty two. Hammurabi ruled the small city state of Babylon (now in central Iraq) the capital of Babylonia. Although not the first to do so, his purpose in writing this collection of laws was to attempt to bring order and fairness to all his subjects. Hammurabi’s Code is heavily dependant on the “eye for an eye” philosophy where the punishment is equal or closely equivalent
