King Creon, the antagonist in Sophocles Greek tragedy “Antigone,” Creon is one of the central characters of the story and is responsible for the tension and tragedy that befalls the stories protagonist, Antigone, as well as others within the story. Interestingly, it is Creon’s effort to honor those died fighting for Thebes, and to grant no honor at all for those that opposed it, specifically Polyneices, the protagonist Antigone’s brother. Consequently, it is Creon’s edict “No man may hide in a grave nor mourn in funeral, but leave unwept, unburied, a dainty treasure for the birds that see him, for their feast’s delight,” (Kennedy and Gioia 1205) that causes the protagonist to act in defiance of the new King.
