In America, we often put more in our mouths than should be humanly possible. According to many of the facts presented in the movie King Corn, apparently most of that is corn. The movie was released in 2007 about two college buddies who rented an acre of land in Greene, Iowa. Greene is an old farming community in which both of the boys had ancestral roots. I don’t think Americans really realize how much their lives involve corn. Americans are “corny” because practically every single product in the grocery store; from steak to pork loin to ketchup to soda pop to cupcake frosting is derived from either high fructose corn syrup or corn based animal feed. That random man that Ian and Curt talked to is absolutely right. As an American we are corn fed. The fact that corn is in our everyday diet is not healthy. As Cheney and Ellis discovered in the movie, most of the farmed corn is turned into High-fructose corn syrup. This version of corn contributes to Diabetes and obesity in people today. The movies purpose was to expose this truth. Corn is slowly killing people. “Experts predict that many parents could soon outlive their couch-potato children, as junk foods and a lack of exercise send them to their graves almost a decade early.” (Marsh) This quote from a daily mail article is a startling discovery. It is the first time in history that the children are not predicted to outlive their parents. Why you ask? The quote says it; junk food.
