Being the direct grandson of His Majesty King Chulalongkorn, King Rama V, King Bhumibol's ascension to the throne was predictable. On May 5th, 1950, at his coronation, His Majesty King Bhumibol Adulyadej, or King Rama IX of Chakri Dynasty declared the Oath of Accession, ‘we shall reign with righteousness, for the benefits and happiness of the Siamese people’ was the promise he made to Siamese people.
His Majesty had a choice to stay in his luxurious palace but he chose not to. Instead, His Majesty chose to stay closer to his people than many other great leaders. He kept his promise for the past 70 years on the reign.

His Majesty’s Philosophy of “Sufficiency Economy” was introduced in 1970. His Majesty wanted to make sure that each family could take care of themselves. They should have enough to eat and to live on before asking or searching on more ambitious goals. His Majesty aimed to decrease the dependence and increase economic stability start from family level, communities to country level. Being equipped with the basic needed, overall happiness could be accomplished for Thai people.
Hobbies
Over the years, His Majesty enjoyed photography, painting, yachting, doing agricultural experiments, communicating with his ham radio, and perhaps most all music. sports, arts, science, music and agricultural experiments. He enjoyed discussing Broadway musicals and Buddhist philosophy.
During his free time, His Majesty played several musical instruments including the piano and saxophone, soprano saxophone is his best. King Bhumibol was an accomplished composer.
