The name King Arthur evokes images of mythical legends and elements that still exist today. The legend of King Arthur effects directors, writers, and even toy makers. But what is it about this legend that fuels our imagination and creativity? Perhaps it is humans desire to see good overcome evil. Some are enthralled with the magical elements. Others love the adaptability of the legend. I believe it is the mixture of good versus evil, magic, and adaptability that drives society to recreate the Arthurian legend. Since the beginning of time, humans have been captivated with the struggle of good and evil. But what do these terms really mean? “Good” generally refers to someone who is selfless. For centuries, magic has captivated people because it defies physical rules. People are intrigued by what they do not understand. In the Arthurian legends, Merlin is the magician. He practices white magic, also known as good magic. His magic is used to help others. In The Once and Future King and The Sword and the Stone, Merlin uses his magic to transform a young Arthur. Disney gave life to White’s creation by creating a children’s version of the legend. Disney’s version is appealing because Merlin is fun, energetic, clever, and fundamentally good. The use of Merlin’s magic is also entertaining. Children enjoy watching the impossible. They understand they will never turn into a fish or squirrel, but they find it entertaining. Fuqua gives the audience a very different Merlin than Disney. Fuqua chooses to cast Merlin as mysterious and illusive. The viewer never really understands Merlin but understands Merlin’s impact on Arthur. We are drawn to this version of Merlin because he appeals to human’s desire to see good overcome
