The murmur of the crowd grew as the people flocked to the man who yelled, “Hear ye, hear ye, and take your chance at pulling the sword out of the stone!” The young knight walked up and easily pulled the sword from its stone encasement. Does this story sound familiar? King Arthur is one of the most recognizable stories in literary history and it all started with a sword in a stone. However, there have been many o Arthurian legends, and each has had their own take on the renowned tale. For instance, did you know that in other tales Arthur obtained the sword from the ruler of Avalon (more commonly known as the Lady of the Lake)? Or that there were two swords; Excalibur and Caliburn? Although there is no exact length of King Arthur's life span, because dates are nearly impossible to acquire from this time period, it is widely believed he was born around the 470’s. From the beginning of his life, he was destined to become king of the kingdom of Camelot and was told he would conquer more. In one adaptation of Arthur's adulthood it was said he extracted a sword (Excalibur) from a stone, which made him king. In other stories, this weapon was also referred to as Caliburn. Throughout Arthur's life, he battled many people, which led to him becoming a very intellectual warrior and tactful planner. Throughout Arthur’s many quests, the most important he had were his conquering of the Roman Empire, his obliteration of uprisings throughout his kingdom, and finally his battle with his most trusted knight, Lancelot. He battled this revered warrior because Lancelot made an attempt to court the Queen. In the end, the Queen fell for Lancelot and Arthur caught them having an affair. After which, Arthur ordered the Queen to be executed for this treasonous act. Lancelot being a literal knight in shining armor came to save the day. He rode in on horseback and saved the Queen. This action infuriated Arthur and forced him to take his forces and invade the land where Lancelot originated. This invasion ultimately led to Arthur’s downfall (“King Arthur & the”.
