Many originally thought King Arthur was a real hero that lived and fought in the 6th century. Throughout history he have discovered that King Arthur was maybe not in fact real. Many historians have tried to tie the legendary King Arthur to an actual person that lived and fought. Most historians have concluded that King Arthur may have been based on a warrior that lived in the late 5th and early 6th centuries. The British warrior many think he could be based upon was a great warrior that held off a Saxon invasion on Britain with the help of his squad that he lead into battle. The warrior was never a king but many say he had the qualities of a great king. Many kings during and after the Renaissance tried to prove that they were legitimate kings because they claimed to come from the blood of the great King Arthur. The questions that arose during the Renaissance did not help many of the kings, a lot of people questioned their legitimacy. No one actually knows who, or what, Arthur is based on but the great warrior of Britain seems to fit into many of the descriptions, and battles, of King Arthur. Geoffrey on Monmouth wrote in his book “The History of the Kings of Britain” that Merlin was the son of a nun and fathered by the Satan. Geoffrey also wrote in another book, “Life of Merlin” that Merlin had a wife and a sister, but there is no parents mentioned in that story. This is also the only story involving Merlin having a wife. Merlin is mostly known for being in the legends of King Arthur but he has been a character outside of the legends. Mark Twain wrote of Merlin in his book, “A Connecticut Yankee in King Arthurs Court.” In this story Merlin is made out to be a villain. In many of Arthur’s legends Merlin is King Arthurs advisor. In others, such as “The Idylls of the King” Merlin is said to be the architect of King Arthurs home, Camelot. Merlin is arguably one of the most widely used characters in literature. Merlin has made appearances in stories as a wizard, a magician, a tutor, and a prophet. Also Merlin has been anywhere from a young boy magician to an old wise man that is advisor to great kings.
