King Alfonso I And Alfonso II: The Duke Of Ferrara

All throughout history, men are considered the powerful, the superior one, and especially those that are in control. In fact, many countries have been ruled by kings for many years and even today the expected person who carries out the duties to keep a household together is a man. One would never question the strength of a man especially if he rules the country or a kingdom. However, being the person in command comes with a number of choices that needs to be made. In certain circumstances, these decisions are rather unreasonable and mostly for self-gain. For example, Alfonso II (Duke of Ferrara) in “My Last Duchess” currently seeks a new rich wife, one with a large enough sum of dowry in which he will benefit the most. However, he fails to …show more content…
In fact, both the characters are of high social standing. The narrator of “My Last Duchess” is a “Duke of Ferrara in Italy.” (Browning 667). While “Ulysses” is a king of Ithaca that is “always roaming with a hungry heart,” meaning he enjoys traveling all over the world (Tennyson 12). In addition, these figures are also considered overbearing in many ways. For example, Duke Alfonso II expects his wife to only look at him when he realizes that she “liked whate’er/ she looked on” meaning that she finds importance and reacts to everything that occurs around her (Browning 23-24). However, he doesn’t want her to notice just any other human or living being but himself. He also states, that she is too friendly with everyone that surrounds her as she is “too soon made glad” or “too easily impressed” (22-23). As for King Ulysses, he values the family he has but not enough for them to be comparable to his adventures. He states that “an idle king” will gain nothing from sitting at home all day with his “aged” wife (Tennyson 1 and 3). He believes that “he is part of all that he has met” (18) meaning that he has this sense of belonging with all the places that he has visited. Lastly, they are selfish in many ways anyone could possibly imagine as throughout the poems they only think of themselves. For example, Duke …show more content…
These two characters are not the greatest example as to what a good leader should be, but they do present a good example of what to avoid when one is in power. Personal gain is something that both these leaders focused on. In King Ulysses’ case, factors such as old age only contributed greater to his greed, but it is understandable because there are only so many things you can do in your lifetime that if you are limited then it makes you want to do it more. While Duke of Ferrara, tries in many ways to be important in his wife’s life, but didn’t get the results he wanted. As a person who is probably used to always having his way

Women throughout the centuries have been forced to make incredibly difficult decisions, some of which are painful and self-sacrificing. The fight for Women’s Rights has been an ongoing battle with many accomplishments, including but not exclusive to the right to vote, the right to an education, Roe vs. Wade, and the ability to have a career typically held by men. Even in this modern age, with opportunities once seen as a fantasy being a reality, women are still unequal in many ways around the world. Where a man stands in the economic hierarchy of society reveals a lot about what kind of man they are. Men strive to be as high as they can in economical standing. This was especially true during the Victorian era because one’s wealth told people how “manly” they were. “My Last Duchess” and “Checking Out Me History” both express anger through a first person perspective, in the form of a dramatic monologue, although the poems offer two different portrayals of anger. In Browning’s poem, the reader is introduced to a seemingly expressive and biased rant from the Duke about his past Duchess, speaking to an envoy. ‘My’, the possessive pronoun, implies he sees women as possessions. The Duke thinks the world revolves around him because he owns "a nine-hundred-years-old name”, the reader realizes with certainty that the Duke in fact caused the Duchess’s early demise. In criticising the character of his past wife, he reveals his very synthetic personality.…

Through out the course of time woman have been said to be weak minded when is comes to ruling, because they are ruled by their emotions and most of all passion and love. Woman have been said to be the source to many of our problems During the reading of The lliad, The Odyssey, and The Aeneid the woman that have "caused the problems" were being told to do so by gods and goddesses. For Example in the lliad Helen was the "problem woman" in this story, however she never left Troy because Aphrodite/ Venus told her not to leave. Selfishness, fear, cowardice and betrayal are all characteristics found in Shakespeare's Julius Caesar. These traits are not found in Julius Caesar himself, but in the men who wrongfully murdered the soon-to-be king of the Roman Empire. Unlike his killers, Caesar’s love for Rome and its people, combined with his superb military ability, show that Caesar was a good man who was fit to lead Rome. Caesar was a good leader.…

“You only have power over people so long as you don't take everything away from them but when you’ve robbed a man of everything he is no longer in your power-he is free” (Solzhenitsyn). Surprise surprise! This essay is going to be very hard for me. I just surprisingly don't agree with it whatsoever. I mean if you don't take something from a man then they will call you weak they will have something to fight against you with they will have some power over you they will try and be more free and before you know it they will have more power than you do.…

Robert Browning’s poetry shows the power imbalances in male and female relationships and often takes the form of dramatic monologue to show the differences between men’s motivations and women’s. In Browning’s ‘My Last Duchess’, an authoritative and rich Duke is made to feel powerless as a result of his wife’s misplaced affections. The favourable qualities of his wife, such as her kindness and gratitude, are interpreted by the duke as offences, “as if she ranked my gift of a nine-hundred-years-old name with anybody’s gift”, implying possessiveness and unruly emotions such as jealousy can cloud judgement. This is interesting as generally a man would be thought of as being more rational, and a woman as being ruled by her emotions.…
