Kindness Quotes In Unwind

Improved Essays
“Kindness is a language which the deaf can hear and the blind can see.” This quote is attributed to Mark Twain, but isn’t exactly his. Regardless of who said it in the first place, the quote tells us that even if one is missing one of their five senses, they can still sense the power of kindness. In the novel Unwind written by Neal Shusterman, many characters commit acts of kindness that shift the course of the plot in impactful ways. In real life there are individuals who make decisions and take action to make another person's day that much better. Often unrecognized or considered insignificant, these deeds go a long way. Acts of kindness, no matter how small, can impact people and their environments in immense ways. There are several …show more content…
When Lev escapes and eventually pulls the fire alarm, everyone begins to evacuate. However, Risa and Connor evacuate the bathroom simply to hide in a lab, where they are found by a teacher named Hannah. If this teacher decided to turn them in, they undoubtedly would’ve dealt with serious consequences. Instead, she reaches out her hand and says, “‘Come with me… If they’re looking for you, they’ll find you once the building is empty… If you want to get out, you have to leave with everyone else. C’mon, I’ll help you’” (84). Afterward, Hannah takes the baby in order to help Connor and Risa exit the building without looking suspect, since Lev had informed the school about the baby as well. Although Lev ended up accidentally revealing them to the police, they do escape. If Hannah hadn’t helped and taken the baby, it’s possible that Connor and Risa would have met their end sooner than they’d like. Then, she sends the two off to Sonia, who commits a major act which continues to prove the impact of being kind. Sonia is a woman who keeps fellow Unwinds in a cellar below her antique shop. “‘There are canned goods on these shelves… Eat whatever you want… I’ll go out in a bit and …show more content…
There are a variety of things people do to mold the world around them into a better place, but we chose to highlight acts of kindness within our community due to the simultaneous diversity and specificity of the topic. In particular, we chose to recognize a junior boy named Carl Fraser who holds the door open at the east wing of our high school each morning. Rain or shine, it doesn’t matter, there is rarely a day he is not standing in that doorway doing a job he doesn’t need to do. However, that is what is special about acts of kindness: They don’t need to be done, but they’re done out of the goodness of people’s hearts. Another student we recognized is a senior girl named Snigdha Kalathur. Someone submitted to our kindness survey and explained that “when I fell down the stairs, Snigdha was going to her study. She helped me up and brought me to the nurse’s office. She ended up skipping her study, despite the fact that she had a lot of homework to do”. Once again, out of the goodness of their heart, another individual in our school carried out a good deed. Snigdha assisting a fellow peer like this isn’t a consistent occurrence like Carl holding the doors open, but it matters just as much. The difference between Carl and Snigdha’s benevolence shows us that acts of kindness come in all different shapes and sizes but still impact people and the environment around

The Huffington Post posted an online news outlet survey by The Daily Beast that rated the “happiest colleges”. Texas A&M scored the highest possible score (10 being the highest ranking possible) for “Overall Student Experience”, 9.8 in the “Would You Do It Again” category and 9.2 for “Full-time Freshman Student Retention”. Texas A&M’s vice president for student affairs, Lt. Gen. Joe Weber (USMC-Ret,) offered the following observation in response to the survey: “Why is everyone so happy in Aggieland? I’d like to think that it’s because from the very beginning we all work to instill in our students the traditions and camaraderie—the Aggie Spirit—that have served us so well throughout our proud history. It all starts with the likes of Fish Camp…

A few weeks ago you assigned us the “Un-Random Acts of Kindness” project to go with the book we finished, “The Five People You Meet in Heaven”. At first, I didn’t understand why we were given this prompt for our project. After completing the novel, I realized the connection you were trying to make. The primary message the book was sending is that we are all connected through one way or another. Performing a random act of kindness, or a planned random act of kindness, can connect us to another person we might have not met if it weren’t for that one moment.…

For our civic engagement project for the Redefining Leadership class, my group, Stephanie, Hailee, Christina, and I, decided to volunteer at the Ronald McDonald House in New Haven, Connecticut on a Thursday. Before we got there, we did not know what to expect, but afterwards, we truly felt grateful that we helped out a great cause. The Ronald McDonald House is a charity house that keeps families close to their family members that are being treated at a nearby hospital. We spoke with someone who works at the House and she told us that eight families were there on that day. We were able to see some people and did what we could to help out.…

Over the past two months I have spent numerous nights filling yards with flamingos while the families inside slept unknowing of what was happening. I spent a night teeter tottering for six hours and made blankets the day after. When I worked at a grocery store I used to stop during my walk back, and return to buy groceries. These are all things I do nearly out of impulse because of how I was raised and who I am. Growing up I learned from a young age that if someone you know needs something, you give what you can.…

I believe that every day we have the power to make the world into a better place. Whether it's by saying "please" or "thank you", recycling one can of soda, or just paying someone a compliment, these forms of kindness is what unify our community and inspire us to be good citizens. Growing up my father informed me that "In America, there are no such things as friends and life is always a competition. " This was very puzzling to me as a child because I understood that competition is what drives our society forward, but I never accepted the fact that solidarity was the way to success. Did having all A's and having immense power in class rankings define success?…
