Personal Narrative: Happiness With Life

A few months ago, a peer of mine came to me with a simple question, “How are you so happy with your life?” I never really put much thought into it. I only shrugged and said, “I just am.” I’ve always been happy. Now, after putting some thought into it, I realized much, much more about my happiness with life. It all has to do with the way I was raised to think and act while the rest of the world runs around like madmen. My mother, Angie, comes from a rural town called Liberty, Kentucky. Everybody knew everybody else. She grew up with the classic Southern mindset. Kindness is the greatest thing you could ever give to a person. She’d spend hours tending to her grandparents. Family was the strongest bond, while work was the hardest part of life. She minded her own business, never gave smart remarks to her elders when they gave her chores. She deeply respected them. She knew what was expected and what needed to be done. The kids in her neighborhood never played after school until all their chores were done. They raised their own cattle and grew their own crops. I didn’t have to be sent to a daycare because my parents were working all the time. I have constant interaction with them. I want for nothing, but that doesn’t mean I didn’t have to earn it. If I wanted something, I earned it by good grades, and behavior. I was also only rewarded on special occasions such as my birthday, or Christmas. I was lucky to have high expectations. It made me extremely proud whenever I had pleased my parents. My mother taught me kindness, love, and how to show others to care about this chaotic world.
