Kindertransport Play Analysis

The play Kindertransport, written by Diane Samuels, is based on the true events that took place in Germany at the beginning of WWII. Specifically the British Rescue mission, called Kindertransport that helped place over 10,000 Jewish children into foster homes. The play is divided into three distinct time periods, pre-war, war and post-war and intermixes them through out. The play is told from the point of view of Eva, who in the beginning was just a child who faced with a lot of uncertainty as her parents struggle with the decision to send her away from Germany. The second period of the play takes place during the war, where Eva is living in UK with Lil and trying to adjust to living in a new country where she doesn’t speak the language. The final period takes place when Eva who now goes by Evelyn is much older and has a daughter of her own named Faith, and has to struggle with who she is and who she has now become. …show more content…
In the first period of the play you can see the uncertainty the parents are faced with, when making the decision on whether or not to send Eva out of Germany. They think they are making the right choice for her well-being, but are still faced with the unknown of what’s going to happen to their daughter once she leaves their care. We can also feel the uncertainty Eva is facing having to go to a new place where she knows no one; and uncertainty she feels having to leave her parents in a war stricken place. Throughout the whole play we see Eva/Evelyn trying to navigate her uncertainty of the choices she has made. Uncertainty is something everyone faces throughout his or her lives. Like Gadamer said, we are questioning beings. It is in our human nature to question things and wonder about what could have been, if we had lead are lives
