In the article “Not kidding around; a push to make kindergarten mandatory has the backing of educators and lawmakers who say it’s vital to development” by Kurt Chirbas, he talks about the option of making kindergarten mandatory. Additionally, he speaks of the importance of kindergarten and the level of educational teachings kindergarten is getting to. Chirbas says that kindergarten is becoming what first grade use to be and is starting to engage in activities to help skills like reading, writing, and mathematics. On another note, he also talks about problems with mandatory kindergarten, and one of those is costs. This article talks about the differences in education from the 1900s to now, it talks about both the at home life and the school life from both time periods. In the first part of the article Rubin talks about how before and after school kids had chores they had to do and how many of them walked up to a mile to get to school everyday. Showing that back in the early 1900s kids were a lot more responsible and eager to learn than they are now. She then goes on to talk about how teachers had strict guidelines they had to follow that varied from something as simple as no smoking to something as seemingly bizarre as not to be caught lingering in an ice cream parlor for too long. Next she talks about how classrooms have changed for example how kids…

She displayed a pig on the board that was drawn by a guest speaker, and the students were asked to replicate the drawing. The teacher I observed also used games to enhance the student’s learning.…

I have picked up a lot this semester, the standards, the social studies fair, and then all of the lesson plans. I enjoy how each of the topic was treated as a separate unit in the classroom. During each unit I could have the children watch the news and pick something that happened, to reflect on. I have reconsidered quite a bit about the topic, including things like how certain events in history should be taught.…
