In the play Kim’s convenience by Ins Choi and in the memoir Thura’s diary by Thura Al-Windawi, some characters had to make sacrifices for their family, to give them a second chance to relive their life in a way they always wanted. During the war, Mouayed had to send his family to Thura’s grandmother’s house because that was a safer place. Meanwhile, he stayed back to take care of the house while the bombing was going on. Thura states “As a family we wanted to be together, but we decided dad will stay here to watch the house” (Al-Windawi-22) In short he risked his life when there was a Possibility of the house being damaged by the bombing but, Mouayad did not care about himself and he put his life in danger for his family, but they still had to struggle for their survival. Although often time’s second chances are hard to get luckily Thura’s family got a second chance as a result of Mouayad’s sacrifice, they survived the war. However, their struggles didn’t end just after the war, Iraqis were still struggling with the consequences of the war. As a result, of the war women’s freedom was very limited. Young girls were not allowed to go to school and colleges due to the risk of being kidnaped or killed. Despite the lack of safety Thura and her sisters wanted to go back to their schools and colleges but Thura’s parents were still afraid of the safety of their children. Thura states “My parents had been agonizing for days over whether or not I should go back to college” (Al-Windawi 126) they were concerned about their safety and they could not decide if they should let their daughters go to schools.
