Kimberly Masi's Presentation On Applied Environmental Chemistry

Kimberly Masi's presentation of Mechanical Engineering had to be the most interesting to me of all the speakers. It was so captivating that it made me think of doing some research on the major, yet I barely can picture myself doing a job like that in the future. Hearing about how she was a big part of projects at Disney World that we all have heard of, is just something that I really find amazing. O'Net's definition of Mechanical Engineering: perform engineering duties in planning and designing tools, engines, machines, and other mechanically functioning equipment, for example her work with the festival parade where she took a design of a float and made it come to life, by working out how to build it and how it would hold up and be able to move. A key aspect that is emphasized was communication skills are key. If you are creative and have ideas how are you able to describe them with good communication skills. A saying that they go by is "Jacks of all trades, master of none", since being a part of the team Disney team she has done many different …show more content…
Cherie Yestrebsky did say don't base your thoughts on chemistry on your experience in high school. Yet even so I just know that what she described is something that is not interesting to me. O’Net descriptions of a Chemist is to conduct qualitative and quantitative chemical analyses or experiments in laboratories for quality or process control or to develop new projects or products, for example her work of cleaning up waters of the toxins that are polluted there. Hearing her story of quitting high school and not going back to till after she had gotten married and had kids, was inspirational to hear—knowing that she had problems in her journey but continued her way and got the career that she wanted. A point that she emphasizes is try to find something that you love to do. She credits her success to her love for what she

Tom Baker Hour I had the opportunity to be able to attend the Tom Baker Hour with a special guest of Jack Jones. Right off the bat, I was comfortable with the topic of conversation whenever they introduced the candidates for the elevator pitch contest. In the classroom we went over what exactly an elevator pitch is and how helpful it is to have one in the future when networking. I really enjoyed watching a variety of people present their elevator pitches, some included CofC students and some were local businesses from the Charleston area.…

First impressions are paramount. They make or break the basic notions you conceive of a person's character. That is the moment when you decide whether you can either be this persons friend, tolerate them, or simply loathe them. Frankly, it is a million times easier to just ignore them and keep to yourself, although this note taking exercise has expanded my curiosity. Never have I ever taken the chance to get to know anyone from my classes as a first year college student, but Professor Straus made that a possibility.…

Chemistry is the field of science involving structures, composition, and properties of substances and matter in order learn how they interact with each other. However, disposing and making chemicals can cause hazard to the environment and wildlife. In “Chemistry: Green and Clean,” Jennifer Weeks builds an argument to persuade her audiences that green chemists are working cooperatively to develop a field of chemistry that can replace polluting technologies. Weeks uses alternative ways to effectively break down harmful chemicals, methods to break down endocrine disrupters and other chemicals in the environment, and techniques to prevent immense usage of water and energy to enhance the logic and persuasiveness of her argument. Chemicals have been used for thousands of years for different purposes.…

I am a chemistry major graduating from the College of Charleston in May. My undergraduate education has trained me to operate and interpret various chemical analysis instruments (UV-Vis spectrometer, gas chromatography, NMR, FTIR) effectively. Subsequently, the subjects I studied (calculus 1-3, organic chemistry, physical chemistry, analytical chemistry, inorganic chemistry, instrumental chemistry) makes me conversant in the molecular interactions that are fundamental to brewing science. Combining my training for chemistry with my affinity for home-brewing, I interned at Holy City Brewing in Charleston and LauderAle Brewing in Florida. Both were excellent introductions to the brewing industry where I learned all about brewing, cellaring,…

High School was a tough time for me when it came to academics. I was in all honors classes, dancing up to 8 hours a week and had a part-time job. I continually felt as if I was drowning in school work and the very industrial set up of many of my classes just made me feel worse. Most of my classes and teachers were structured like a factory and gave little to no room for creativity. As someone who loved art, I often found myself seeking refuge in the art department with my art teachers.…
