Kimbell Art Museum Essay

On my visit to the Kimbell Art Museum there were two artifacts that I found interesting. The first one was “Urn in the Form of Cociyo, God of Lightning and Rain”. It is of Zapotec culture from the site Monte Albán Illa (in modern day Oaxaca, Mexico). This artifact stood out to me because of its weird and intriguing features. The eyes are shaped into two parts representing the clouds and the water needed to grow crops. Its snout extension has a combination of jaguar and snake allusions: the shape of the mouth represents the roar of the jaguar which symbolizes thunder, and the tongue is a snake’s flashing tongue which symbolizes lightning. The shape of the mouth is derived from the Olmec baby rain god called Were-jaguar. The dress is that of a priest, with the large disk-shaped earplugs and knotted collar showing his high status. The kilt with wave-like patterns represents elements of a thunderstorm. Next, the second artifact that I found interesting was “The Singing Priest”. This artifact was from the Mesoamerican civilization in Teotihuacán, Mexico. It is a wall fresco depicting ritual images. On the right there is a priest wearing a headdress, holding an incense bag on his left hand, and on his right hand, there is a stream of flower-decorated water coming out. He seems to be …show more content…
The descriptions on the art work were helpful especially when trying to explain what some of the elements symbolized. Just like any other museum, it was very quiet, but I did like that the museum was separated into two building so that I could get some fresh air in between. I know museum attendants are there to help visitors and to protect the exhibitions, but I feel like they’re breathing down my neck and waiting for me to destroy an artifact. I’ve been to a different museum before and I didn’t feel like this, but maybe it was because there were more people that

Uaxactun is a sacred place of the ancient mayan people. Located in northern guatemala it was first explored by American archaeologists in 1916. The excavations at the temple pyramids of Uaxactun significantly furthered our understanding of ancient mayan civilization. The scholarly article Multispectral imaging of an Early Classic Maya codex fragment from Uaxactun, Guatemala by Nicholas P. Carter & Jeffrey Dobereiner outlines the process of analyzing small fragments of a codex from an ancient Uaxactun temple made of plaster coated bark dated back to 400-600 AD. Using the process of multispectral imaging, which is to capture an image and analyze it at specific frequencies across the electromagnetic spectrum, archaeologists were able to detect not only paintings and writings, but they found a second hidden layer of writings that had been resurfaced and repainted over in ancient times.…

The objects that I were assigned were the Bandolier bag from the Native American Delaware Tribe, and the Painted elk hide from the Easter Shoshone tribe. Bandolier bags were extremely popular among most Native American tribes, and each tribe expressed their culture through them in a different way. This particular Bandolier bag comes from the Delaware, or Lenape, Tribe. It is estimated that it was created around 1850 C.E., and is crafted with beads on leather hide. This object has two components to it, one being the shoulder drape and the other being the small bag.…

I have chosen the Revolution in Paint exhibit from the North Carolina Museum of Art because the art that was created during the late 18th century introduced the use of impressionism and the drastic change from artworks created and influenced by the Renaissance to those created to express a new and emerging Industrial Era. Looking over the virtual art exhibit the display begins with examples of art created and influenced by the Renaissance followed by examples new pigments, collapsible paint tubes and storage that allowed painters to leave the studio and paint wherever they wished. With substantial information provided on the creation of impressionism during the time period the exhibit ends with a couple of paintings using impressionism to show the overall change in color, technique, and insight of art. Curating pieces and placing them in a chronological order, viewers are able to see the transformation from one style to another with new advancements in the art world due to the Industrial Revolution happening during this time. While I am not the curator myself I believe that the intended audience of the museum are artists and history buffs interested in the creation and production of items that led to the introduction of impressionism.…

This stone is a circular relief carving approximately ten, feet in diameter and depicts Coyolxauhqui’s dismembered and disfigured body (Aguilar-Moreno 55). The placement of the stone was of great interest to scholars, as it indicates that the Aztecs would recreate the myths of their people’s origin. Any human body that was thrown from the top of the temple would roll down its sides and land atop the Coyolxauhqui stone, paralleling the story of Coyolxauhqui’s death. If the Aztecs did reenact certain religious tales, then the need for a mask of one of the prominent deities is more…

Along with Paleoindian and Archaic peoples, in the 1981 work O’Neill concludes that there are ten possible tribes to which rock art can possibly attributed to in specific ranges: Various Plains Apache groups, Comanche, Kiowa, Kiowa Apache bands, Cheyenne, Arapaho, Wichita, Pawnee, Osage, and Kanza. He also suggests that the sites “… could be measured in hundreds of years rather than thousands” (O’Neill 1981, 26). This is a broad range of traditions and peoples to filter through at any given site. Finally, it is in archaeology itself that makes the narrowing down of the creators of each work difficult. The overlapping and possible multiple use of the sites makes the dating and assigning source of tradition close to impossible.…

The artist that created the artifact took great care to specifically emphasize the woman 's breasts seeing that the hands of the women guide the the eyes to the breasts but lack detail to keep the focus on them. It is believed that it large thighs and midsection signify that the woman is ready to give birth to a child, while the breasts could signify that the women could nurture the child. The lack of detail of the face has been the cause of several speculations to be created for its meaning, including that it could be a woven hat. The lack of the detail on the lower part of the body and its petite size, suggests that the artifact was meant to be held and not placed on a surface for…

Throughout this course I have gained more of an appreciation for artwork and the artists that create them. I have also gained an appreciation for the people that try to define what art is in general or more specifically what makes good art. We have read great thinkers and their philosophies on this, and the fact that even people of such great intelligence can disagree on the subject proves how challenging it can be. By reading the opinions of these great thinkers, and by discussing their thought with our class, I feel I am in a much better place as to define what makes good art myself. I define art as anything created by someone that inspires another to appreciation.…
