Kim Davis was jailed on September 3, 2015 for five days after defying a federal court order to issue marriage licenses to gay couples. Defying the Supreme Court, in her plea, she states that she could not sign marriage documents for same sex couples nor would she allow any of her six deputies to either. After four couples sued her on July 2nd, federal judge David Bunning instructed her to issue marriage licenses, to which she still refused and then filed an emergency stay of Judge Bunnings ruling with the justice who oversees the sixth circuit, Justice Elena Kagan. On August 31st, the order from Justice Kagan, denied Davis' emergency stay. Despite being under a court order Kim Davis continues to defy laws.
To issue a marriage license which conflicts with God’s definition of marriage, with my name affixed to the certificate, would violate my conscience. It is not a light issue for me. Government officials do not get to decide which laws to obey and which to not. All Americans are presumably guaranteed the right to practice their religion without state imposition but public officials are obligated by their oaths to obey and uphold the laws of the country they are apart of. If Kim Davis's religious convictions give her qualms, than her only conscientious choice left is to resign her position. Personal religious beliefs must not be allowed to trump the rule of law as it is perverse and un-American like to advocate
