Orcas are called Killer Whales, but they’re actually Dolphins. The name “Killer Whales” actually comes from the fact that they kill whales. When living in the Ocean Killer Whales travel approximately 60 to 100 miles per day and when being kept in captivity the number is decreased by a significant amount. Seaworld also feeds the Killer Whales dead animals, mostly fish. This is a big problem because their instinct is to hunt their prey, Killer whales are having to adapt to a different environment and if they were released they would not survive in the ocean. The size of the tank is small compared to the amount of miles they travel and the depth of which they dive, The tank is 600 feet in depth the length was not given but it could be about 500 ft in length. Whales are usually between 16-25 ft long depending on gender. Killer Whales usually have collapsed dorsal fins, this could be caused by the size of tank, interactions with other whales, or where they are placed at night but either way it is not healthy. The lifespan of the whale decreases. There have been photographs of killer whales and you can the damage the whales have dealt with. Many newborn Calves die because they are being kept in captivity. For instance there was this Killer Whale and she was pregnant, once her calf was born they were together for mostly all of the day. Seaworld then saw the baby as a distraction and said that it is ruining her moms performance and quickly they decided to separate them and little did her mother know that her baby was going to be taken from her to a different seaworld location. This was documented and after the baby was taken away for several hours you could see the whale just in a corner crying, screaming. They also found something interesting and it was that the whale was trying to locate where her baby was, and no one at seaworld had been able to capture that until that day.
