In Marina Keegan’s essay, Why We Care About Whales, Marina claims on how humans value the life of humans and the life of non-human animals. The essay starts with a social occurrence of emerging beached whales. A natural force that is created by the movement of both the moon and the Earth push whales to the beach. While giving a detailed, vivid explanation of how beached whales die, Marina maximizes the sadness and lamentation of whales’ deaths. Furthermore, she describes her anecdote, which was happened at the beach in front of her house. Following frenzied neighbors and animal activists, she helped rescuing 50 beached whales. As she participates in the relief work, she connects her own personal anecdote…
Killer Whales are a very large and strong breed of marine mammals that belong to the dolphin family that can grow up to ten meters long and can weigh up to six tons. Theses whales are a highly social species that are very intelligent with an excellent sense of hearing and have developed highly complex communication systems. Killer whales are immediately recognizable by their distinctive black-and-white coloring, when you see these magnificent creatures many people immediately get the idea of Shamu from SeaWorld and the tricks they preform, most people don’t remember that that captivity is limiting the whale’s freedom and life. Captivity is not only taking away and damaging these animals mental and physical health, it is also playing a role in taking the lives of the trainers that risk their lives swimming with killer whales just to make a profit for SeaWorld.…
Whales in captivity is a horrible thing because the whales are separated from their familie, are forced to perform in front of screaming audiences, and they can act out and hurt humans and each other in small spaces.…
In this paper, I will discuss a Humpback Whale biome of their choosing as an animal from that biome. I will explain how a humpback whale lives in weather and their biome. Also, I will explain where does a humpback whale live at in different oceans.…
Both Killer whales (Orcinus orca) and False killer whales (Pseudorca Crassidens) belong to the Delphinidae family. False killer whales resemble orcas because of the shape of their skulls, but the two species are actually not closely related (Baird, 2012). False killer whales are found in all tropical, subtropical, and warm temperate seas (MarineBio, 2013), usually in relatively deep offshore waters (Taylor, et al., 2008). In contrast, killer whales are often found in cold coastal waters (National Geographic, 2015). False killer whales are mostly solid black or grey, while killer whales are easily recognizable by their distinctive black and white coloring (Shamsul, 2012).…
My animal is the Blue Whale. It is an endangered species. Endangered means that a animal or plant in danger of extinction in the near future throughout most or all of the world. Threatened means any species likely to become an endangered species in the near future throughout all or a significant portion of its range as defined in the Endangered Species Act.…
Killer whales should not be forced into captivity because of the orca's intelligence, what conditions are needed in order for orcas to be happy, and the lack of education that aquariums like Seaworld provide. For example, the director of the movie Blackfish responded to claims that a Seaworld trainer made about the issue of whale capacity. The trainer stated that “we as humans should not differentiate based on the intelligence level” and the director came back saying “the evidence on animals intelligence in level in captivity proves that the higher the intelligence the more negatively the social structure is impacted”. The director is saying that claims by Seaworld are ludicrous because highly intelligent predators need to be in the wild in order to live the healthiest and most enjoyable life. Furthermore, the director of Blackfish…
I will be talking about dolphins inside the Chesapeake Bay estuary. The largest dolphins reach a length of about 13 feet , but most species are 7 to 10 feet long. Dolphins have smooth, rubbery skin and they normally have some mixture of black, white, and gray. They have two flippers,on their sides, as well as a triangular fin on the back. Dolphin calves are born in the water after a period of one year for about 18 months. They remain with the mother for about four years. They are a long-lived species, with an long life span of up to 45 years. A bottlenose dolphin's maximum breath-holding capability is about 12 minutes. All marine mammals have special adaptations for diving. These adaptations enable a dolphin to conserve oxygen. Dolphins, like…
Blackfish released on July 19, 2013 by the producer Gabriela Cowperthwaite. The film shows orcas being trapped in SeaWorld for human entertainment. They are trapped in small swimming pools where they have no place to hide or no place where they can be away from the rest of the orcas. The argument it makes is that orcas should be free and not in pools. The trainers at SeaWorld believe that SeaWorld should close and let all the killer whales live their rest of their life in the ocean where they belong. They don't want to let go of Tilikum the whale because of breeding reasons. Moreover, the orcas should be free because they become aggressive towards the trainers and has killed many while trying to entertain the audience, they're not to be kept…
The Whale Shark (Rhincodon Typus) is the largest shark in the ocean, growing to a maximum of 65 feet long and weighing over 10 tons, that’s more than three times the size of the great white shark. It also makes the whale shark the largest fish living today. Unlike the great white shark, the whale shark’s 3,000 teeth are tiny and they do not use them to tear apart mammals, in fact their teeth is of little use to the whale shark. So what does the whale shark eat to survive? Whale sharks don’t hunt their prey like other sharks, whale sharks are filter feeders, they consume food by engulfing their prey that enters their mouth. Like most filter feeders their diet consists of small organisms such as plankton, krill, shrimp, algae and larvae. The…
It is required to conserve a certain population-level of every specie in order to prevent biodiversity loss and for ecosystems to continue operating. Whales are starting to extinct and whaling is one of the important causes of this problem. The blue whale is the largest animal and a lot of them are found in the Antarctic. The specie reduced abundantly because of hunting in the 20th century. The Antarctic blue whale is classified as Critically Endangered on the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) Red List of Threatened Species. The whales are now protected from commercial and scientific whaling. Climate changes are also having and impact on the whale population in feeding grounds, as well as tourism, krill fishery and research…
Humpback whales can be recognized by their large size, bumpy head, and long flippers. Atlantic humpbacks have mainly white flippers, but those in the Pacific have a darker color to them. In the Northern hemisphere, humpback whales are found in the North Pacific to the South-East Alaskan. Humpbacks from the Western area and the Bering Sea migrate to Northern Marianas. Humpback whales are facing extinction due to poaching.…
Bill Reid uses designs drawn from the Haida culture. There is a use of large crescent shapes in this piece, mainly shown in the curvature of the main body mass. The color is is a dark neutral bronze that has some more intense shines on it due to the material it is made of. The low relief on Killer Whale follows the curvature of the form rather than contrasting with it.…
According to NOAA the southern resident killer whales are endangered. These are the only killer whales that inhabit waters near the United States. It is important to gain a better understanding of why this group of whales is becoming endangered. If an apex predator of this magnitude disappears this can create a huge problem in the marine ecosystem, because the higher the predator is on an ecosystem the more impactful it becomes. One species that would benefit from the decline of killer whales is the leatherback turtle. The world knows they are endangered but that does not matter to the killer whales that predate…
The blue whale is a marine mammal. It is the biggest living creature in world. Their veins are so big that a human could swim in them! The heart of a blue is as big as a slug bug! They are not fish because they breathe air and they give birth.…
