John Hargrove, a former SeaWorld trainer says the damage to these animals in the name of entertainment and profit is morally and ethically unacceptable. Hargrove got the idea to stop treating killer whales like circus animals. (BBC) (National Geographic)
It’s also highly morally and ethically wrong to keep killer whales in captivity because of their intelligence. Killer whales “have the second-largest brains of all ocean mammals, and are believed to be one of the smartest animals on the planet.” (Independent) They are not able to use their intelligence their natural way in captivity. Whales in the wild “build complex family lives as well as sophisticated hunting techniques” (Independent) but captive whales are suppressed by their circumstances and they cannot have either of these capabilities.
All in all, orcas should not be used for entertainment and live a regular life, not an artificial life in entertainment places (BBC) even though, people who work in places like Dutch Wonder Land and SeaWorld will lose their jobs.
