Killer Hill: A Short Story

As I played my latest video games, sitting in my favorite bean bag chair, on a seemingly flawless day until I heard the holler of my Mother proclaiming that I needed to leave the house to accomplish something rewarding. Being the gracious child, that I indeed was. I departed hastily, just as most children would; if their mother grabbed them by the ear and flung them out the front door. I dusted myself off, grabbed my bike, and rode over to my friend Tom’s house to hang out. When I arrived, I had discovered that he had a babysitter watching after him. So we decided that we could escape from the house by claiming we would be walking around town. While on the way to Killer Hill chatting about this and that, we admired our small town and all the …show more content…
Albeit, we felt the dull ache of our muscles from hiking to the top of the hill, we continued walking along the path, we kept our eyes on the towering trees which stood impeccably with one another. We might have paid further attention to the beauty of the landscape or how the blending of the pine trees created a marvelous aroma, the sounds of branches creaking all around and the rustling sounds of the pine needles, created the illusion that someone hid just behind a tree. I caught the feeling that neither Tom nor I, certainly knew how alone we were. We had stopped in our tracks when we caught a glimpse of the ideal place for us to build a fort. The area was just barely within our sight, secluded beyond a few trees and shrubs. Now it was time for us to decide what to construct, being the young children, we were, we had decided to create it by laying branches and logs across lower spots on the side of the hill where erosion had brought it down. Tom and I, had walked along the edges of the perimeter around the fort to find branches to lay across, however, we began running out of

Wilderness; To McCandless and many other people, it has a very special and specific allure. While to most it is a lawless and dangerous place, McCandless sees the wilderness as a pure state where the evils of modern society don’t exist. This is a place where someone like him can live by his own rules and only be dependent on himself. And for McCandles this was what compelled him to live in and of the wilderness. Although McCandless journal entries depict that he does receive some answers for his questions, his reality of day-to-day life in the wilderness is not as romantic as he thought or imagined it to be.…

The neighborhood was noiseless, and the sky was pitch black, for there had been no moon on that summer morning in June. My mother and father started our car and waited for Sofia,my sister, sean ,my friend, and me to get inside. It was time to leave our dull suburban home in San Jose, and drive to the beloved National Park, Yosemite, to hike Half Dome. On the car ride there I had slept, but awoke right when we had gotten into the Sierra Nevada Mountains. Looking outside of the window and noticing all of the evergreen trees was surreal for me, as I rolled down my window a strong smell of pine and fresh air poured into the car.…

Stanley’s Pines The year my father’s mother passed away (1958) brought great change to my family. I was five years old when granny died. That was the year dad started constructing a new home in the country, on Cantelou Road, so he could be near his aging father. Our house under construction was on a corner lot next to the thickest grove of trees I’d ever seen.…

It was a foggy Sunday morning, here in this beautiful state of West Virginia. The grass was still wet from the dew and the neighborhood was still quiet. It was a perfect summer day outside; the type of weather a family would enjoy outside on their front yard. It was at least eighty-five degrees outside with a slight breeze, kids were either wearing tank tops or tee-shirts with shorts and slippers, sundresses, or outside with their bathing suits. Outside you could see; kids playing tag, opening the fire hydrant, playing basketball and eating hot dogs and burgers. With all this occurring my family decided to sit out in the front yard and relax. Whenever we had family around it wasn’t just mom, dad and siblings, it was all of our aunts, uncles, cousin and grandparents.…

“What to write, what to write, what to write,” I thought out loud, “Short story ideas are harder than I thought!” We had commenced our short story unit in English. I was striving to come up with some ideas sitting on a stump along the primordial trail. Vines engulfed the forest in a corybantic scheme, encasing it in a velvety film of nature. Scintillating and radiant wildflowers grew along these vines, with butterflies of every discrepancy ravenously fluttering along these flowers.…

The weather was pleasant and warm, not excessively hot to the point where it would be uncomfortable sleeping. The birds tweeting almost as if they were singing outside and the children’s laughter made the day perfect. It all sounded so perfect and oh so soothing. Just as I was home laying on the ground about to nap, I heard a call from the others. There was an enormous commotion commencing right outdoors and my slumber was disrupted by everyone’s running and uproar outside.…

As I make my precarious way into the wood, it seems my cautious tip toeing is pointless, for with every step a twig or a leaf snaps underfoot. Nevertheless, I continue on, the sound of my footsteps reverberating with an impossible loudness through the surrounding foliage. I gaze upon the towering trees around me, noting that the mottled skin of their branches bear a pleasant resemblance to my own flesh; the burn scars which race up and down my whole body a constant reminder of my task. The wind begins to pick up and I am left without my sense of smell to aid me with my passage through the forest. I try, fruitlessly, to pick up a scent from the undergrowth, however, I discover to my disliking, human scat, which does point me in the right direction.…
