Atticus tries to teach Scout that color doesn 't matter, and he didn’t want Scout to get “Maycomb’s usual disease,” which is racism. An example of how Atticus tries to prevent this disease is when he had a conversation with Scout’s uncle and said, “I just hope that Jem and Scout come to me for their answers instead of listening to the town. I hope they trust me enough… Jean Louise?” Bean didn’t understand what he meant at first but later she knew that he was just looking out for her. Atticus’s client, Tom, was found guilty of raping a white girl. The verdict was unfair because a predominantly white jury found him guilty because of the color of his skin. During this time period, it came down to the blacks versus the whites, and the whites always won. In a similar way, racism was a problem in the town of Byler. In To Kill a Mockingbird, Atticus was a great father to Scout. He showed Scout that he loved her by letting Scout crawl into his lap and tuck her head under his chin. Showing her that he loved and supported her makes him a good father. Her father taught her valuable life lessons, such as not to judge other people by the color of their skin and to do the right thing. He once told Scout to stop fighting at school when people said mean things about him, and the next day at school when she was about to fight, Scout balled her fists up and walked away. Atticus is a good father not only because he taught his kids good life lessons but, he also took care of his kids and gave them the love and support they needed. One time, a mob had tried to hurt Tom, and Atticus was not having it. He protected Tom but that made the mob even angrier and they turned on Atticus. Scout, Jem, and Dill were there and they tried to defend Atticus. Atticus begged them to leave for their safety, he tried to protect them. Drunk men are very dangerous and are unpredictable, and Atticus tried to get them out of harm 's way. In The Silver Star Bean’s mom, Charlotte, was the complete opposite of Atticus. An example of that is when, Charlotte lied to her kids about having a boyfriend. Whenever she left to go to the city, she would tell Bean and Liz that she was going to go see him, but it
