"Why do you do you notice the splinter in your brother 's eye, but do not perceive the wooden beam in your own eye? You hypocrite, remove the wooden beam from your eye first; then you can see clearly to remove the splinter from your brother 's eye." Matthew 7: 3, 5. We are hypocrites. We teach that our racial ideals have advanced so much over the years but we are still the same as in our past in North America. In 1932, Jim Crow laws were still in effect, laws that segregated black and white people. Although the Confederate side lost the American Civil War decades earlier, and the Union freed all the blacks from slavery, black people continued to live segregated lives in the American south. To Kill a Mockingbird, written by Harper Lee, takes …show more content…
Examining racism is one of the reasons the book was written and is one of the primary themes in the book. In To Kill a Mockingbird the racism is directed towards black people. In Maycomb, Alabama, where the book is set, most of the people are very racist, using terms such as "nigger" (Lee, p 83). At that time in history, the majority of white people believed that they were far superior to black people. That ideology was so ingrained, that it was referred to as "Maycomb 's usual …show more content…
In Mockingbird there was a robbery and the woman who was robbed told the officer it was Syrians (Lee, p 252). Today, many people in the west believe that all Muslims are terrorists and, as a result, we are denying thousands of refugees safe asylum. Desmond Tutu said, "If you are neutral in situations of injustice you have chosen the side of the oppressor," (www.brainyquotes.com/quotes/quotes/d/desmondtut106145.html; January 17, 2016). In To Kill a Mockingbird, Tom Robinson is unfairly tried and, as a result of racism, wrongly convicted. The justice system in the United States is still biased against black people. According to the Center for American Progress, 60% of all incarcerated inmates are black and a black person will receive a harsher sentence than his white peer who is tried for the same crime (www.americanprogress.org/issues/race/news/2012/03/11351/the-top-10-most-startling-facts-about-people-of-colour-and-criminal-justice-in-the-united-states/; January 17, 2016). We have obviously not improved the stigma or racist ideologies against black people when over half of inmates in the United States are black. Although we are pressing them in different ways we are still oppressing both black people and Syrians. By trying blacks and whites unequally we oppress the rights of black people and by refusing to help the Syrian refugees

In the book to Kill a Mockingbird the author shows the reader what it is like to experience many events and emotions in the time. Even though there are a lot of events and emotions, I think that the novel mainly shows experiences of racism, through unfair court cases, racist comments and racist stereotypes. In the novel To Kill a Mockingbird, unfair court case is just one of the ways racism is portrayed throughout the novel. For example, the quote ‘"He got me round the neck, cussin' me an' sayin' dirt--I fought'n'hollered, but he had me round the neck.…

Civil Rights activist, Alveda King, once said, "Racism springs from the lie that certain human beings are less than fully human. It's a self-centred falsehood that corrupts our minds into believing we are right to treat others as we would not want to be treated. " Many people, regardless of race, have demonstrated this repeatedly throughout history. The Holocaust, for example. Harboring strong, yet unnecessary hatred towards Jews, Hitler had millions of them put in concentration camps and wiped out during WWII.…

In To Kill A Mockingbird, Harper Lee addresses racial discrimination and injustice through its characters, their internal and external conflicts, events, and symbolism. For instance, after being sent to prison Tom Robinson was shot seventeen times when trying to escape, “To Maycomb, Tom’s death was typical. Typical of a nigger to cut and run. Typical of a nigger’s mentality to have no plan, no thought for the future, just run blind first chance he saw,” (Lee 322). In other words, the town treated Tom’s death as something they could have bet big on when tried.…

Atticus ignored the rest of the people in Maycomb and went out of his way to support a black man known as Tom Robinson, who was accused of rape. Racism is the key theme in the novel.…
