A male mockingbird can learn up to 200 different songs. The novel To Kill A Mockingbird by Harper Lee is told through the childhood of Jean “Scout” Louise Finch, a six year old to nine year old girl. Her family, Jeremy “Jem” Atticus Finch (brother) a robust teenage boy who slowly understands important details about the world throughout the story. Also, Atticus Finch (dad) a very well rounded man with a great sense of discretion. These three live together in Maycomb, Alabama, where they are faced with different challenges that lead to great life lessons. From their “grievous” neighbor to the sham trial of Tom Robinson. There is always something going on with the Finch’s. In this novel, Harper Lee uses characters to demonstrate why innocence should be protected.
The first character that is a mockingbird is Jean “Scout” Louise Finch. The people of Maycomb are now finding out that Atticus will be defending Tom Robinson a black man in the town. The problem is that this town is set in their racist ways and racism is ubiquitous here. Threats and bad comments inundate in on their family. Scout gets terrorized at school for this. When the vociferous Cecil Jacobs yells, “Scout Finch’s daddy defends n******” (Lee 99). Scout fights him because she knows that Atticus is doing the right thing and it is not fair for people to destroy people’s innocence, especially when they have done nothing wrong.
