Dolphus Raymond is wise and knows many important things in life. He understands stereotyping and wrongfully accuses himself of being a drunk to help people understand why he lives the way he does. Everyone in town knows of Mr. Raymonds “Drinking” problem,“‘I don 't know how he stays in the saddle?’ Jem continues on by saying, ‘How can you stand to get drunk before 8 in the morning?’”Jem is willing to speak rudely about an adult, behind his back because that is what the adults do. Because everyone thinks that Mr. Raymond drinks Mr. Raymond doesn’t know what they say about him and isn’t affected by his stereotype. When Scout Finally meets Mr. Raymond he explains his reasons for pretending,” ‘Wh---oh yes, you mean why do I pretend? Well, it’s very simple,’ he said. ‘Some folks don’t----like the way I live. Now I could say the hell with ‘em, I don’t care if they don’t like it. I do say I don’t care if they don’t like it, right enough ---but I don’t say the hell with ‘em, see?’” Mr. Raymond wants Scout to understand that he wants to give people a reason for the way he lives. People don’t appreciate his choices and because of that people choose to beleive that he is a drunk man. Mr. Raymond also wants Scout to see that he doesn’t care what people think of him because it’s not worth changing the way he lives to a lifestyle he doesn’t want to have a few people like him when the African Americans like him just the same.
