True courage is “when you know you’re licked before you begin anyway and you see it through no matter what.” (Lee 149). This quote reveals that true bravery is when you keep on trying even when you are fighting a losing battle. This is a skill that not many people have because the easiest thing to do then is to give up. Not many people are able to maintain self-discipline. Those that do are able to keep fighting because they know they will achieve victory, no matter how many tries it takes them. Tom was wrongly accused of raping Mayella and was taken advantage of because he, a colored man, was helping out a white woman. “Tom Robinson was the only person who was ever decent to her. But she said he took advantage of her, and when she stood up, she looked at him as if he was dirt beneath her feet” (Lee 257). Tom always tried help Mayella Ewell, free of charge. This shows bravery because Tom knew that Mayella would betray him, since during that time, all white men despised and loathed black men. In fact, Tom Robinson knew that Mayella’s father, Bob Ewell, would have beaten or killed him had he found out that Tom was helping his daughter. First of all, Atticus supports all the Negroes and is not prejudiced against them because of their skin color, Furthermore, Mrs. Dubose is addicted to the drug Morphine, but she finally gets rid of her addiction with her last breath. Moreover, Tom is clearly portrayed as a mockingbird throughout the story. He was innocent and did nothing wrong, yet he was punished and shot at because he was black. Clearly, Atticus, Mrs. Dubose, and Tom Robinson are all very strong and brave when it comes to doing what is right.
