The environment directly effects values, personality, morals, work ethic, behavior, and mental illness. The environment includes specific personal events, social events, and political events. It also includes parental personalities, how one is raised, where one is raised, when one is raised, and what happens to them and around them later in life. This effect of the environment on the above traits are highly effected by the environment as opposed to genetics. Janet Kelfer is a Caucasian American who is 62 years old.…
Karyn and Stephen have developed a positive relationship with First Home Care staff and will communicate with them regularly. Caseworkers have reported that they are dedicated foster parents who worked diligently for the best interested of the children. Karyn and Stephen also work hard to ensure that the children in their home are receiving all services. They will often advocate for additional services, if necessary. They have continued to remain in compliance with all First Home care paperwork, training requirements, and attending meetings as required.…
The Los Angeles Department of Family Services is one of the biggest child welfare agencies in the United States. The mission statement of DCFS is to service children by maintaining their safety, permanency and access to effective caring services. DCFS has struggled to provide these core values for numerous reasons. Social workers face overwhelming amount of caseloads. The increasing amount of children and families that are assisted by DCFS require provision of multiple services.…

Introduction Having such opportunity to be endowed with a million dollars to develop ideas on how to improve the Child Protective Services place me in a position where I am deliberating very hard on the programs or policies to implement. There are several programs and policies that are implemented in the Child Protective Services for clients and it is important to take into consideration the programs and policies by developing efficient and reliable platform that will be beneficial to the population they serve. I will certainly, invest some of the resources on the already existed programs of the Child Protective Services and research on new ideas that could help with their programs. Employing additional CPS workers and providing proper…

There is very little cross training and sharing of information between Student Service departments. These departments work autonomously from one another and have no real understanding of each other’s process/procedures. When it comes to serving foster youth students the assumption made by staff are requirements are the same across departments. This is not true and has led to major miscommunication of information to foster youth students. This miscommunication can lead to prolonged financial aid disbursements, priority registration denial, unavailability of counseling appointments, and denied access to DSPS services.…
Overcrowded homes and understaffed Child Protective Services (CPS) offices has threatened the foster care system in the Dallas-Forth Worth metroplex for many years; recently, however, it has proven to be a problem that we can no longer turn a blind eye to. The Dallas News reports that in Dallas ISD alone, there are approximately 3,600 students without homes. They furthers that many children without homes “simply stop going to school and hide on the streets”. With a high demand and a low supply, foster homes in Dallas are severely overcrowded. This has elicited more and more children sleeping in the Child Protective Services offices.…
Foster care has been a process of successes and failures. Originally Foster Care was established for poor and poverty stricken families who were unable to adequately provide for their children. Prior to welfare involvement, children were simply placed with family members or community members who were able to care for the child. In 1636, Benjamin Eaton became the first official “foster” child. Since that time, numerous laws and policies have been set up in an effort to care for children who have experienced abuse or neglect and provide temporary services to families in crisis (Barbell & Freundlich, 2001).…
Foster care and the educational system are complex organizations. Both organizations address and serve children who experience abuse and neglect. Addressing the educational needs of children in foster care presents a unique challenge to schools, social agencies, and foster parents. It is estimated that in 2013 there were approximately 589,000 children and youth in foster care across the United States (Children’s Bureau, 2014). In 2013, 58,699 children in California were living in foster care.…
How do we know that children survive better in foster care? Who chooses whether they belong in the child care system? These are a couple of the questions that many people ask when they think about foster care. Foster care started in the middle of the 19th century by a man named Charles Loring Brace. Brace would take children off the streets and place them in homes around the state.…
Transition of Youth Aging out the Foster Care System Every year, there are more than 30,000 kids who age out of the foster care system (Richards, 2014). In most states, the cut off age is 18; however, some states have increased the age to 21. When these kids finally reach the age of 18, they are left to the world with no support. Homelessness, hunger, lack of healthcare and education is what nearly 30% of the 30,000 kids are left with. More federal and state governments need to instate policies for the well-being and safety of the kids that are left to face our society without any support.…
