At first glance, it is hard to telling the meaning of the art piece. It looks like a formal arrangement of objects, however, it is indeed making a statement. According to Lacma.org, the flowers on top are called “Wandering Jew” and the art piece also includes a Jewish harp. Therefore, the deeper meaning of Ed’s Kienholz’s History as a Planter has to do with Jews. The mannequin feet are a bit tattered leading to representing all the struggles of the Jews, but they are still neatly placed. One struggle would be the Holocaust which is represented by the oven in the center where the feet are in. It is in the center because due to the Holocaust an entire ethnic group almost vanished.
