Playing sports at a young age can be fun, but also can put the athlete in a hospital because the got a blow to the head. Athletes should start playing sports around the age of sixteen because that's when the brain is at least 85-90% full developed. If young athletes get a concussion, it could affect them for the rest of their lives. Some people argue kids should start doing sports at a young age. High school and youth sports players suffer brain injuries in any sport because the sports are too dangerous: therefore, we should wait for the childś brain to fully develop and then give them the option to play sports. Athletes should not play intense sports until they are around the age of 16 due to the number of injuries children are getting. …show more content…
Young athletes are starting sports young, and many kids don’t have any injuries at all. According to a study by Datalys, “90% of kids who play sports in a year suffer no injuries at all” (Miller park.4). Many kids that are playing at a young age have not been getting any injuries, and each year the number of kids getting no injuries keeps increasing. Even though young athletes playing have not been getting injuries, as the child ages, the sports become more intense. Most kids advance to more intense sports, that they receive brain injuries easier, which affects them later in life. Although competing against other teams can cause concussions Dr. Bennett claims “60-70% of concussions occur during practice” (Nader & Reed par.15). Even when athletes are not up against other teams, they can still get concussions. This means sports are still too intense for younger children.
