At 11 years old, one wouldn’t expect a child to know what being kidnapped is. Kidnapping is taking someone illegally by force. In Jaycees case, it was not just being taken away it was being raped. If Jaycee wasn’t kidnapped then someone else would’ve been. Jaycee says fearfully, “ Why me? Why can’t he take care of his own problem? I don’t want others to be hurt, though. Better me than someone else.” (52) This displays Jaycees character well; she is not willing to help Phillip, but at the same time she is willing to help for the sake of others not getting hurt. Jaycee is still a child and was forced to live a life that she never would have imagined. However she thinks that there could be many people going through worse things. Jaycee explains, “While I was there I would tell myself it could be more; there are so many people in the world in worse situations than mine.” (49) She was kidnapped, sexually abused and taken away from her whole childhood and teenage life. Through all she went through and she still thinks in a positive way. Think of this; an 11 year old going through all this and still understands that there could be worse things in the world.
