Kidd's The Secret Life Of Bees

Decent Essays
An opinion, something to discuss, to share, to believe in. Everyone has an opinion on something, ranging from who’s the best football team to which candidate has better political policies. Sometimes people or even a society may have so much faith in their opinion that they believe their opinions are facts. Nevertheless, where do opinions come from? Backgrounds, religion, and culture are all important factors on how opinions are molded. Kidd’s The Secret Life of Bees demonstrates that a powerful symbol, such as black Mary, can have different effects on different people, based on their backgrounds and personal experiences.
Black Mary, also known as black Madonna, is often depicted, with her infant son, Jesus, showing her as a motherly figure.

In “Corn-Pone Opinions,” “The Creation Myths of Cooperstown,” and “Graven Images,” by Twain, Gould, and Bellow, respectively, each author explores the fallibility of human perception. While the main purposes of these three essays differ, each one still implements the theme of trending to illustrate how and why people naturally conform-- even if a movement involves believing in a falsehood. In the first essay, “Corn-Pone Opinions,” Twain analyzes how most people shape their beliefs based on what is popular. Twain specifically makes three points to explain why people merely follow the masses to formulate their point of view, with the first one being that trends always start with an individual with power.…

There are many similar themes in the novels Great Expectations, To Kill a Mockingbird, and The Secret Life of Bees. Great Expectations centers around a poor boy named Pip Pirrip who learns how to become a gentleman in London. To Kill a Mockingbird focuses on a young girl named Scout Finch who is learning about life and injustice in the small southern town of Maycomb. The Secret Life of Bees centers around a teenage girl named Lily Owens who searches for her identity and purpose in South Carolina. Though these novels all have different characters and plot lines, they all revolve around the same themes of children growing up without a parent, being criticized and denigrated by outside influences, and showing courage in their search for prosperity…

August Boatwright and Rosaleen Daise To me the most admirable characters in The Secret Life of Bees are August Boatwright, the oldest sister and who collects the honey from the bee boxes, and Rosaleen Daise, Lily’s mother figure and who goes to Tiburon with her. I think that August is one of the most admirable characters because of how compassionate and caring she is. “Some things don't matter much. Like the color of a house. How big is that in the overall scheme of life.…

One of the most understood scientific proofs or in this case real universal truths in our modern world is that the earth is round. Through scientific discovery, imagery, and the development of true, irrefutable proof, agreed upon by many brilliant scientists, we have established that the Earth is in fact round or at least appears that way physically. For centuries the truth was that the Earth was flat. As recent as the last few days, B.O.B., a relatively famous musician (Not my Truth), has made headlines stating through a grouping of social media posts on twitter that in fact “the shape of the planet is actually flat.” (Jeremy Gordon)…

Depression is another one of those “first-world” problems us humans face as a society. Although it seems like a deathly globe-renowned issue is in mainly todays -mostly in teens- current society, Sue Monk Kidd demonstrates how depression may have affected those over fifty years ago- especially the South-American colored people of the Civil Rights Era in 1964. In The Secret Life of Bees, May, an oddly complex character, changes in the novel because of her depression. May is often portrayed as a very gentle, compassionate and selfless character, who immensely feels the suffering and pain of others on an emotional level because of the death of her twin sister. She changes into a character who is selfish and neglectful as she isolates herself,…
