Discuss an accomplishment or event, formal or informal, that marked your transition from childhood to adulthood within your culture, community, or family. As the pages of my favorite childhood story flutter through my fingers, memories of fantastical worlds flood my mind. I begin to read aloud about the four children, sent away to a mysterious house and the wardrobe that transports them to a magical new land. The tale is just as enchanting as I recall, but this time through the story, the magic I appreciate most is not found in the pages of The Lion, The Witch, and The Wardrobe.…

Becoming an adult is a momentous occasion in any young person’s life, but often it is marked by pain and hardships that push us as individuals to earn our autonomy and personal voice. There was an event in my life which pushed me to stand up to my parents and ultimately become an individual in their eyes. Life as a homeschooler was somewhat isolated until the end of my eighth-grade year. It was a damaging environment because of the constant interaction with my mother who was extremely critical and often lost her temper. The feeling that I could never please her overwhelmed me and even when I went to public school her manipulation of myself and others climaxed.…

The Path to a Higher Education “Without education, you are not going anywhere in this world” (Malcolm X). In both Frederick Douglass’ article “Learning to Read” and in Malcolm X’s article “A Homemade Education” they discuss the challenges and obstacles that they had to overcome. The results of these experiences can be good or bad, or a little bit of both, but either way they shape our lives. The biggest life experience I’ve ever gone through is my move to California. In my transition from childhood to adulthood one event stands out. This event was my experience with the American legal system as a witness to a friend that was being unjustly persecuted. When making decisions, you don't always know whether or not you've made the right one immediately. I was deciding on which high school I wanted to attend; I chose to go to public school, even though I had previously gone to private school. Why would a kid choose to go from a class of 24 to a brand new school with 1700 kids without knowing anyone? That sounds crazy to me, but my 14 year-old self thought that it would be just fine.…

Now, by cut I don’t mean a slight trim or a nice bob, I’m talking about a one inch bush. Only a week prior to doing the deed did I decide I was going to go through with it. It didn't take much thought, at that point in time it was just hair, but in the past it was much bigger than that.…

I think that the accomplishment that made me feel like I was truly on my way to becoming an adult was my admittance to Duke University's Talent Identification Program (TIP). Each student gained admittance to the program based on their scores on the ACT or SAT. Once accepted, I got to choose an academic course that I found interesting and live for three weeks each summer on a college campus and attend classes for about 8 hours each day. Throughout my three years at TIP, I learned how to be more independent and also think analytically. Simply being selected to take the ACT felt like an accomplishment.…
