I was born and raised in the Houston, TX area, but my family always took road trips to different places. It started at a very young age, so I believe that’s why I’ve always had a wandering and curious spirit. You’ll learn that Americans are extremely spoiled and in return, you’ll be more open to things done differently than they way you’ve been accustomed to your whole life. You’ll learn not to judge others. You’ll learn how to accept people for who they truly are. You’ll learn how to befriend or work with people from all walks of life. You’ll learn the importance of tailoring your speech or behavior out of respect for the culture you’re immersed in. If a student wasn’t sure about taking the time to study abroad or take a gap year, or someone was trying to decide to take the leap to travel, what would you say to persuade him or her to go for it?
Studying abroad or taking a gap year will help you discover yourself and your passions. It will also give you a chance to develop yourself personally and professionally (more than school will). With the job culture becoming more and more international, type of experience abroad makes a student more marketable to employers.
I am graduating college a year late because of the co-op and semester abroad I did but, it will be so worth it once I start applying for jobs! Studying abroad doesn’t always cause students to graduate late, however. You just have to plan it out and pick a host university that offers the courses you need to stay on track.
